Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

Hi all. I've been reading all these problems and supposed fixes. Tried just about all of them and nothing worked. Made an appt with the genius bar and then found this article. It recommends a fix that seems all too simple but for the first time in months, I've stayed connected for over 10 minutes straight!! Yippee. Check it out. Maybe it'll help you. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    Hi Dan Wool,
    it happened like this.

    1) I went to the Genius bar a first time. I described the problem and all the research I had done about it. I was lucky enough to actually show them the packet loss, while there, and to compare the quality of the connection with a MBP they had there. They ordered the Airport Card replacement and told me they would have called when ready to install.

    2) They called me and I went to the bar again and left my MBP for the Airport Card replacement. Got back home without my MBP.

    3) They called me because replacement was done, and the testing did not show the original problem any longer. Went back to the Genius back and collected my MBP.

This is a total of three visits to the Apple Store. I realise this can be challenging if you don't have a car / spare time or live farther than I do from the store (about 50 mins drive).

    Hi Dan,

The replacement cost about $80. I did the repair myself. The biggest challenge was taking the MacBook Pro apart and putting it together again. You need two special screwdrivers and a lot of patience. But I am extremely satisfied with the results.

It worked for me to remove the RealPlayer login item as described above. Before I removed it, the wireless N connection kept dropping out; after removing the RealPlayer Downloader login item, it seems stable.

This seems like an odd bug -- certainly OS X should be more resistant to this kind of corruption, and also RealPlayer should not publish stuff with bugs!

I didn't like the downloader anyway, glad to be rid of it.

Well, I'm in the game too and finally broke down today and called apple. Explained that I had tried everything recommended here and nothing is working to resolve the issue. Also explained i have until 3/09 left on my apple care warranty so what would they do. They authorized the genius bar at my local apple store to install a new apple card and antenna to see if that'll work. I'll have to relinquish my machine for about a week while they deal with this. Still no guarantees. But I'm am convinced it's with the MBP since I also have an ibook and powerbook G4 that share the network and they have no problems with connectivity. Good luck everyone.

So yeah, same problem here as well, 2.5 ghz macbook pro bought last spring, all of a sudden now that im back home on break, the wireless continues to scan, find my wireless, then drops it and scans again. Over and over and over again.

This is what ive found from this thread,
    1. Apple doesnt know how to fix it and hasnt replied to the thread
    2. No one has found a real fix for this besides sending your mbp in to get the wireless card replaced ($80)
    3. We're all screwed

    Thanks Giacecco (and others)!

So how much time elapsed between "2)" and "3)"? Look like it was an in-store operation, right? ...i live near an Apple Store. It's the downtime I'm concerned with not the traveling. Can you tell me how much it cost (in whatever it is you use for money where your from)?

Same day, but it was chance, it could have taken days, depending on their engineers' availability.

I went back home between (2) and (3) because they did not know it would have been same day. I drove for more than three hours on that day just to go and come back home twice, but it was worth it in the end!

Same problem, looking for a fix. Been happening for weeks now, that's long enough for a patch?

This deserves a clear link on the main apple support page for OS X with a fix.

It's making any online activity that needs a socket / continuos session a cr@p-shoot

My wife and I both have Macbook Airs, and hers was getting consistently low (~2ms) ping times with our Time Capsule. However, mine was 6+ seconds and often times with high packet loss percentages!

The linked solution (from Donna Penn) of wiping out all stored networks seemed to work for my laptop for awhile. However, it looks like near one end of our house, our closest neighbor is using an Apple wifi network too. With the Time Capsule set to 5GHz N only, I couldn't keep a connection. My guess is that it's interference from the neighbor's network.

The Airport Utility doesn't let you specify the Channel you want to use when you specify 5GHz N only - unless you hold down the Option key when you select that dropdown. Now, I can specify that I want to use something other than channel 36.

So, I've made the change. Let's see if it helps in a consistent fashion.

Just an update on my issue.

I sent my MBP into Apple for a new Airport card. MY MBP came back from the Apple repair department last week. The issue was fixed. Unfortunately THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM RESURFACED THREE DAYS LATER.

I haven't had a chance to read all 46 pages of this post, so I apologize if this is old news. Unless my second airport card also went bad, I think this is more proof that this is a driver problem.

Oh, and yes, I did try the cache clearing fix as posted several pages back before I sent the machine to Apple.

Well, this is very disappointing indeed. I'm about to take mine in for an Airport replacement too hoping that would do the trick but 3 days is hardly the fix I had in mind! Doesn't Apple realize that if there are 46 pages of posts concerning this problem that it must mean it's pretty widespread and serious? I've been a loyal apple purchaser since 1986'ish and I must say that this problem and lack of response from them has me reconsidering Mac vs PC--did I just say that? Better post while I have the connection.....

    Add this to the story

3 Macbook Pros 15", all LED, no worries, well pretty good.

    2 Macbooks white 07 and 06

    2 iPhone 3G

    1 iPod Touch 2G

the iPhones take out the Macbooks. The Pro's make the Macbooks unstable.

No they don't have fixed IP conflicts, hidden SSID, realplayer.

They just fight it out and some lose. One of the Macbooks gets taken out by a cordless phone.

Only thing I can currently think from reading all this is Mixed Mode g/n

    Why are the iPhone's g =(

    Resolved.

    Dud airport card.

Most pleased with the new authorized apple repairers.

Have managed to go through 2 power supplies since then!

Apple to their credit have kept the machine working with a minimum of fuss.

    Hello All,

It's probably too early to tell if this is going to stay working, but I have found that when I disable my wireless security on the router, my connection is much more stable.

Of late, I have had to renew my DHCP Lease every 3 - 4 minutes just to keep surfing, but since I have disabled security (which may not be feasible for everyone - I kind of live out in the sticks so it's not a big deal for me), I haven't dropped my connection yet. It's only been about an hour or so, but from having to renew my lease every 4 minutes previously, it's like cold Bud after a week in the desert.

This may not be a solution for everyone, but it's simple to test and definitely worth a try.

    Thanks for listening.
