Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

It's certainly possible that you have a hardware issue.

I hadn't checked this thread in a while, but my wireless is still working badly. However, I have some new information. Recently, someone started working at the office and brought his own Macbook pro. It is very similar to mine: bought in March 2007, 2.16 15 inch MBP. He has the exact same problem. Other people have different models, including the latest unibodies and they work pretty well.

I've tried literally every solution in this enormous thread over the past six months and nothing has worked, except reinstalling Leopard and not updating it: 10.5.1 works well. Every update after it, makes my wireless fail.

This is the problem, described again, in case someone can come up with new solutions: I connect to the network (a large network using business class D-Link Access Points), get a correct IP address and get online for a while (between one minute and a few hours).

After some time, I am still connected, have an IP address, DNS addresses, etc., but I can't browse the Internet. However, I can browse our network, reach our internal servers and other network computers. It is the Internet that doesn't work. Restarting Airport usually fixes the problem (sometimes restarting it several times). Flushing DNS cache makes no difference. Using OpenDNS or other fixed DNS makes no difference.

It is definitely a software problem, not a problem with my card: I only have problems in this network and no problems at all with OS 10.5.1. It is not a problem with the network configuration... other Macs and PCs work well (even PCs that cost a fraction of what my MBP cost me work perfectly!)

Apple, please, please fix this! It's been a very long time and quite a few System Updates and Airport Updates that don't solve this. We bought expensive computers and bought into the "Just works" motto... in this case... "It just doesn't work!" I, and certainly many of the posters in this thread, are very disappointed.

I guess I need to throw my hat into the mix. My MBP is having the same problems. I see that some 'fixes' are to turn N off and only use B/G settings. Well this will not work with me. I travel for work and use my MBP on the road - I used to think the hotels were the ones having issues, GADS it couldn't be my precious and superior MBP!! Well last nigh while on vacation and traveling with the family I encountered a hotel with issues agin, so I thought...

My wife booted up her Dell and had NO issues at all connecting to the hotels WiFi network and me and my supposedly superior Mac sit in the corner tethered to the ethernet connection on the wall. I know am very doubtful those other hotels were the ones having issues and the problem was with my computer. I tried many things to connect, turn off AirPort and delete the connections then reconnect - no help.

I really like my MBP overall but if this is an issue and I have to work with what the hotels offer I my have no choice but to switch back to a PC - EGADS!!

I have exactly the same issues as the rest of you guys on here. I bought a MacBook Pro on Thursday last week and all through the weekend my Internet connectino would stop and email accounts would go offline. Not a great introduction to the world of Mac ...

If I turn Airport off and then on again this would temporarily fix it but it's obviously not an ideal resolution. So I called Apple Support this morning and they tried a few things and eventually sanctioned a replacement machine.

Did Apple kinda 'fix' this in 10.5.8??:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9949809#9949809

Looks like it only works when the computer is connected to a power supply though - I experience about a 3-fold drop in internet speed when I am running off the battery.

Just been reading through just a few of the posts with endless amounts of other people with MBP's that will not work with wireless!

I have been trying for months to get the wireless connection to work ok.

    Symptons are:

Connected to my router but pages will not load.
Turn off airport then back on and web pages may load.
If the above does not work reboot the MBP

Like many others my wirless router works fine with pc's, infact I have a laptop that cost £300 that works perfect with no issues, beginning to wonder why I paid so much for something that can not simply connect to a wireless connection and maintain the connection?

Anyway what is the solution to this mess???

I have been following this thread for a while now and have never been able to get the wireless to work consistently on my MacBook Pro (of course it always worked fine when I went to the Apple Store!)

I have had no problems for the first time since I bought the computer almost a year ago after installing the software update: "AirPort Client Update for MacBook and MacBook Pro" (1.0)

It's been a few days now and that is the longest I've ever gone without any issues. I can even stream video wirelessly which I wouldn't have even considered before.

Has Apple finally fixed the problem??

Argggg. I have an Intel MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2008) running OS X v10.5.8 and I can't install this update. It is telling me that my computer does not meet the hardware requirements. When will it end?!!

Jeez Zebra that's really helpful. This is my 7th mac laptop and it IS the computer and not the router. Get a grip!

Once again the moderators have come to our rescue by ignoring the issue but deleting posts. Thank you Apple. This is a software issue, get it fixed otherwise there is going to be a revolution. I have 7 laptops since 1993, still in the house and this macbookpro 10.4.11. You created the problem, FIX IT!

I was having the same problem and I think I fixed it....... At least I haven't had the problem for the last 5 hours now which is amazing. I used to renew the DHCP or power cycle the modem and router (at the same time) none of this worked for longer than 10 min until i did the following simple steps:
    1. unplug both the modem and router
    2. plug in the modem and wait for it to completely boot
    3. plug in the router and wait for it to completely boot

    Work away, simple and easy.

PS. I also cloned my mac address early this week, maybe that's helping as well.
