Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

I posted in this thread years ago. Haven't had a problem since. Have 7 macs and 2 iPhones that are all rock solid. What I did was I did my homework. 90% of the issues in this thread are going to be resolved with some combination of the following:

    1. Swap out the crap router.

    2. Learn how to configure the router and your Mac's network settings

    3. Find the interference

    It's that simple.

Some other food for thought. This thread probably has 300 unique individuals, it's a pretty small sampling of Apple's customer base. I'm sure to get flamed and it's ok, but your Apple equipment is no different than mine - it will work reliably.

So if I were to go to school and try to connect to my wireless network, should I go up to the headmaster and tell him to switch and change his 'crappy router' just so that my 1800 € macbook connects to the network while all my friends' normal pcs connect to the network no problem?

    come on!

Well, no, what about items 2 and 3.

Obviously you are connected to the network, but your speed isn't what you are used to. Are you wired or wireless. If wireless, try a wired connection - that alone could filter out where you need to look.

If the problem persists with a wired connection I would do basic maintenance to my system to see if that improves it. If not then your route to the internet isn't so good. Talk to your ISP about troubleshooting their side.

If wired improves the connection then it's time to look more closely at your machine's network settings.

wireless and wired are the same.... download email is working. upload to emails is also very slow.

And the same at different places and different networks.

I had an identical problem recently and the fix was in a setting in the ISP's mail server - contact them. It makes sense if it's the same where ever you go - it's always the same mail server.

Hi all I just bout a new MBP couple weeks ago and same issues, intermittent wireless drop when signal is strong. After spending many hours yesterday playing with all kinds of setting I tried this, which is also noted in an earlier post,  and viola!! it stopped dropping :

Go to the Apple>System Preferences> Network. Click the "AirPort" on the left and click the minus sign to remove it. Then click the plus sign to add Airport back, and click "Create" and slide "AirPort" to the top of the list and be sure to click Apply upon closing.

Hope this helps so far so good for me. Good Luck !

After posting here updgraded the firmware on my Belkin N1 vision router, with a beta upgrade mind you, and I now have a much more resilient connection.

So my Macbook Pro (late 2007) running on 10.6.7 has been running just fine until two days ago when it started this same problem of dropping out every 5-10 mins.

I know its not the router because I've had no problems with it for the past 8 months and nothing has changed there, and its not just at my place, the problem occurs at my parents place as well.  And its similar to everyone else's where if I just turn the airport off and then back on it works just fine for a few minutes.  I thought it might be it getting too hot like one person suggested but even when its running at a cool temperature it still dropped the signal.

My wireless connection drop issues began about 6 weeks ago...had my MBP for ~18 months & an older 13" MB wirelessly (5G) connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station. In addition, I've two Airport Express units and a Samsung wireless connection to a Blu-ray player, all at 5G. I downgraded the the MBP wireless connection to 2.4G and all's well for now...but like most all of you, what's going on with the MBP and when is Apple going to acknowledge this issue???

Well if it's been running fine for years but just now started having issues, it sounds like it could be a hardware failure of some type or a new software conflict.

You might want to make an appointment with your local Genius Bar to have it checked out, or at least take your Mac down to your local Apple Store to see if you have the same issue on their network.

I have a brand new MacBook Pro and I am having this problem too.  Even though my other devices can stay connected, I think it is my router that needs to be replaced.  Can someone recommend a good router that doesn't cost a fortune?

My Airport on my PBP 1,2  is loosing connectivity, too (the Networkstatus is constantly changing). As I have no disconnecting issues with my other Apple products (PBP 6,2, iMac, PB, 2 iPhones, iPad)  I guess that the Airport card is causing the problems.
