Boris Calligraphy, Title 3D, and Final Cut Express HD 3.5

Help!!

So I'm working through Tom Wolsky's book (Final Cut Express HD 3.5 editing workshop) and I just got to lesson 12 to work with Title 3D. Well when I go to start the lesson, I try to call up the Title 3D from the generator menu in the viewer. The pop-up displays all the different selections except for Boris/Title 3D. I can't find it anywhere on the program. I've searched in my preferences folder on my HD and I noticed that the BorisFX plugins where installed and that Title 3D (in the Final Cut Express preferences folder) was also there. I've tried discarding the plugins and reinstalling them and that doesn't even seem to work. Does anyone have any idea why my FCE will not let me access Title 3D? Anyone else come across this problem? Tom, what do you think?

I've heard of the problem and I don't know what causes it. You'll probably need to be a full uninstall of all the FCE pieces and reinstall from the disc, though even that's not a guarantee.

I'll give that a try. The weird thing is, even though Title 3D doesn't show up in the generator menu, I can still open lesson 12 and work with the Title 3D sequences that you have created. Well, we shall see if a full uninstall fixes it.

I tried reinstalling - no joy.

After some digging around on Google I found this forum post:

Looks like the QuickTime 7.4 update broke a number of things including the Boris plug-ins. Basically they have lost their bundle flags so are not being recognised by Final Cut Express (or Pro). If you look at one of the replies to the above post there's a link to a file you can download which contains plug-ins with the bundle flag set - here's a direct link to the file:

http://www.borisfx.com/download_files/CalligraphyForFCP.dmg

Just copy the Title 3D.bundle and Title Crawl.bundle files to the following folder, overwriting the existing ones:

/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Express Support/Plugins

This fixed the problem for me.

yes i was doing the same thing ... working through the wolsky book and boris was not listed ... i know it used to be there ... must have gotten blown out in an update or something...i have boris on my pc that came with vegas so i will try this fix tonight ...

boris still included in 4 ? ... i'm still using 3.5 and boris used to be in the generators list but not anymore ... i recently upgraded quicktime so i'll try this other fix...i even re-installed and boris still did not show up...

There should be a Boris folder in Generators that includes Title 3D and Title Crawl. Did you do an upgrade to 3.5?

yes i have fce 3.5.1...boris used to be there in generators with title 3d and title crawl...it seemed to go away after i did all of my apple software updates a few weeks back ...

You might have to uninstall FCE and all it's components, Title 3D, Title Crawl (which should be in the plugins folder in the Library) and all receipts and reinstall. This problem has occurred from time to time with upgrades. No one seems to know what causes it.

Thanks for the information. It's weird how this happens to some people. It does not happen to the great majority of users, but it comes up occasionally. I don't think it's related to QT7.4, because it happens with FCP upgrades from like 5.1 to 6. It happened with earlier versions as well.
