Dual Quad-core Mac Pro reboots from sleep

My brand-new Mac Pro nearly always restarts rather than waking up from sleep. Just now I left it to go to sleep by itself and came back two or three hours later. When I touched the space bar, it restarted.

I have an IOGear firewire hub plugged in with nothing attached to it and lots of USB devices plugged in.

Dual 2.8 GHz Quad-core, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

I put this post up on the main board. Just wondering if anybody has tried it earlier, and what results?

Decided to call Apple myself about this issue.

He said to reset Power Management by:

Go to Mac HD/lib/pref/System Configuration folder/then trash com.apple.PowerManagement.

Has anyone tried this yet? I did and it seems to be working, but no long sleeps yet.

I was wondering why you would want to put the computer to sleep overnight?

just that it starts up quicker. That's all. I NEVER had any sleep issues with any of my macs before so I thought nothing of it.
Why not just shut it down and then in the morning switch it back on? Are there benefits to putting it to sleep apart from a quicker switch on time.

It makes a lot of sense to shut down at night. Boot vs wake from sleep is only about 15 seconds longer for me ... yet my Mac Pro system consumes 36 watts of power in sleep mode (measured via UPS power draw meter), including the few watts drawn by the power brick for my monitor. 36 watts is a lot when multiplied by 10 to 16 hours and then by millions of computers! Like the equivalent of a power plant.

No additional wear and tear on components: the hard disks are shut down during sleep anyway and whether memory and network adapters have power or not does not affect their longevity.

Cheers,
Karl

Yes, but what about all of us ( me ) with the 8800 card, and the same problem?

It's the 2600XT, that's the problem. Just talked to Applecare today after my replacement for my 4 time repair machine was replaced with the stock Mac Pro and was exhibiting the sleep and artifacting problems. They said it was a known issue that the stock 2600XT card was indeed causing problems.

Okay, so what do we DO about it? Wait, I guess.

Same problem here.

restart from sleep.

Mac PRo 2.8 GHz octo. 2 GB stock RAM plus 4x 2GB owc 800MHZ chips. 8800 GT. Two Raid 0 of 2 disks each (4 seagate 750GB 7200.11). Either two 23" or 23 & 30.
I changed the RAM to no avail (for other reasons, fear not 😉

Ermmm.. max-pol, it could be your RAID drives.. the fatal clue is here, on the specs for the MacPro.

http://support.apple.com/specs/macpro/MacPro_Early2008.html

at the bottom of the page - footnote #6

"8-core 2.8GHz Mac Pro systems configured with one ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card meet ENERGY STAR requirements. 8-core 3.0GHz and 3.2GHz Mac Pro systems configured with a single graphics card meet ENERGY STAR requirements. All other Mac Pro systems meet ENERGY STAR 3.0 requirements. Systems configured with an Apple Fibre Channel or Mac Pro RAID Card do not comply with ENERGY STAR requirements."

Hmmm..

Deb.
