Q: Dual Quad-core Mac Pro reboots from sleep

My brand-new Mac Pro nearly always restarts rather than waking up from sleep. Just now I left it to go to sleep by itself and came back two or three hours later. When I touched the space bar, it restarted.

I have an IOGear firewire hub plugged in with nothing attached to it and lots of USB devices plugged in.

Dual 2.8 GHz Quad-core, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

But are you a 7-day-a-week Photoshop user? I do not know one pro-Photoshop user (and I know at least 30) who cannot go long on a Mac without relying on some kind of maintenance utility for smooth sailing. Currently, I shut down every night so I have no idea what the benefits are of the 3AM gift from Apple. But I do know, without Disk Warrior, I would have thrown my G4 out the window ages ago.

+Way OT...+ once in a while I would use periodic all I guess, or fire up Tiger Cache Cleaner (haven't bought LCC yet) but SuperDuper cleans out all the temp files, cache and probably more.

Photoshop? no, just consult. #1 maintenance: turn off Spotlight, which I think was where "Spotless" was born.

Sometimes I'd like to find out why Disk Utility doesn't do more, or at least warn "Problem detected but you need Disk Warrior!" or a better filesystem (maybe it is, and can't be helped?) What IS the best file system? Surely not NTFS 3.1 (better than older versions but still not immune).

One thing I do like that I leaned from first exposure to Windows, that you can 'schedule' a file system full check, even with mapping out bad blocks, on a startup - no need to drop into SUM and run FSCK which is what I do now without DW.

Cleaning the caches (TCC or Applejack) goes a long way to avoiding potential and real problems - I would run those before every OS update.

I'm having the same problem here as well. Just another voice I guess. I'm very frustrated about this...

Ok, after reading 10 pages in this thread, I'm sad to say, "Add me to the list." My new Mac Pro worked perfectly for the first few days, but just yesterday failed to wake up from sleep. At first it rebooted when it was supposed to just wake up, but a little while ago it wouldn't even boot up. The fans came on, but nothing else happened. I had to pull the plug to stop the fans and then use the power button to start it up again. Other than the sleep issue, it's working fine...for now. If anyone comes up with a solution, please post it on the forum. I'd hate to return the unit too Apple only to have the same issue on another machine. I wonder, though, why it didn't have this problem when I first got it. After reading other posts, the issue seems to materialize after a few days of using the computer. I'm very disappointed. I might add that I never had any problems with my G5 and never had to call Apple about anything.

I purchased my computer Jan 22nd and became aware of problems within the first couple weeks. Early 2008 Mac Pro dual core quad 2.8, 320gb HD (added 4 seagate 1tb HD's), 2gb ram, (added 8gb.) I Also experienced the restart from sleep mode. In a addition the front panel firewire ports were not working. They would supply power, but would not recognize any hard drive, video camera or flash drive. USB ports were intermittent. After spending 3 hours with tech support, Level 2 tech had acknowledged that both were a known problem with this particular machines serial number, and assured me that a fix was available. After taking the computer and case number to a local Apple store a new machine was exchanged without question... to note, After trying all suggested fixes... resetting pram, ecm, changing all power saving settings, and then working through software testing with tech support it became obvious that a design or hardware problem existed.
My replacement machine is working perfectly without any of the previous problems. Although inconvenient, Apple was good about resolving the problem, but I would not expect a fix without replacing hardware.

Well, that would be "poor quality" not poor service, yes?
He certainly has a right to expect good quality. When it doesn't happen, he should expect good service. I think we just disagree on the definition of good service. But perhaps we can agree that he ended up with nothing largely due to his own actions...

For what it's worth, I have the same issue. I was hoping 10.5.2 would fix it, but no luck. Hey Apple... what up?

The rebooting upon wake problem has mysteriously stopped since switching off the Wireless MightyMouse and installing a Razer Pro mouse and drivers this Saturday and have not had a reboot since.

I will switch the MightyMouse back on and re-connect it to the 'Pro tonight and see what happens.

Apple are due to collect the 'Pro as a returns on Wednesday and I'd like to see if this mouse swap is any way responsible.

Add me to the list of my mac system rebooting from sleep. I just pressed the spacebar and the next thing I heard was the mac startup sound.

I got my system last week and now it started having this issue.

Add me to the list: same symptoms here. None of the suggested solutions did help with my machine.

This solved the issue for me:

    • Reset the PRAM (Boot the machine and hold ALTCOMMAND+PR for 3 startup gongs)
    • Reset the SMC -> http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304123-en

I did not do the PRAM reset, but just the SMC - and so far waking from sleep seems to be OK again after several days of reboot on wake.

    Thanks.

False alarm. Just rebooted after tapping Control key to wake up. Lost my work This totally stinks. I cannot recommend that anyone buy a Mac Pro until Apple addresses this!

Same here . . . reboots when I wake from sleep. Not all the time, but most of the time.
