Feb 20, 2008 8:10 PM in response to Braindead Macby Chateaubugs,Let me suggest that you wait out the 14 day return period and, if there's been no formal fix announced by Apple, return it for another. They'll likely let you swap out the drive for you at the store, if you ask them to. This accomplishes two things: it'll get you another 14 day trial, and send a tangible message to their accounting department, who will put pressure on those responsible for this blunder. -
Feb 20, 2008 8:53 PM in response to sigeatsby Neal Jackson,You know, the more I think about this debacle the more darkly comic it becomes.
When I first bought Apple computers all those years ago I did so because they just worked...straight from the box (excepting those statistically DOA due to the odd manufacturing fault). Every Mac machine was a joy to use. The care and attention laboured over by the Apple Soft/Hardware engineers on the Mac were a revelation in the PC world.
Now, in 2008 we cannot rely on Apple to figure out how to reliably get a keyboard to work with their OS and PC's! How dumb is that? It's not that Apple even make dozens of different keyboard/mouse designs: MacBooks come with a keyboard built in and Apple only manufacture 2 others for the rest of their computers...one wired the other wireless. They couldn't realistically have fewer permutations; c.f. the myriad Logitech and Microsoft input devices for PC's.
The famously loyal Apple fan base sprang from the appreciation of the simple genius of a Mac; that and it's phenomenal reliability.
What will the Apple (computer) fan base look like in a decades time if they keep popping out designs where their own (minimal) peripheral components are incommunicado?
Data Input...the most crucial aspect of owning a computer and Apple engineers have lost the skills to make it happen. Maybe they spend the better part of their days chipping away at flint.

Feb 21, 2008 9:03 AM in response to Neal Jacksonby Canb,I have been following this thread, as I have been considering a new Mac Pro.
Does the problem only occur when waking from sleep?
I had been hoping that 10.5.2 would have solved it.
It looks like I'll be putting off the purchase indefinitely!
I'm sure that I am not alone!

Feb 21, 2008 9:55 AM in response to Braindead Macby Neal Jackson,Is anyone here using a non BTO MacPro?
Does your MacPro deviate in any way from the online store configuration(s) below:
Single 2.8GHz or Dual 2.8GHz, 3.0GHz or 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Harpertown” processors
2GB memory (800MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics with 256MB memory
320GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive
16x double-layer SuperDrive
Wired Keyboard
Wired Mouse
Is anyone reading this thread with the above configuration(s) and, most importantly, absolutely nothing else added experiencing the reboot from sleep problem?

Feb 21, 2008 9:59 AM in response to Neal Jacksonby The hatter,I think there are some stock systems that have had trouble, at least in the past based on reader reports here:

Feb 21, 2008 10:03 AM in response to Neal Jacksonby dosers,The stock systems in Apple Stores have the problem! So, there is no relation of stock to CTO in regards to this problem... -
Feb 21, 2008 10:14 AM in response to transplant6by The Gibbon,For those with issues, are you using the bluetooth mouse or keyboard? I'm really curious if using a hard wired mouse and keyboard along with disabling bluetooth in the system preferences resolves the reboot from sleep problem. -
Feb 21, 2008 10:24 AM in response to The Gibbonby Chateaubugs,It doesn't matter. Those with and without BT have made their complaints known here. -
Feb 21, 2008 10:33 AM in response to Chateaubugsby Chateaubugs,Well, FedEx confirmed receipt of my dud in California, but still no shipping confirmation on the replacement. Although I need my computer desperately, I do hope this delay is a sign that they have isolated the issue and are altering the hardware somehow. Stay tuned -
Feb 21, 2008 10:55 AM in response to Chateaubugsby The Gibbon, not really. those without a bluetooth mouse or keyboard didn't necessarily disable bluetooth in the system preferences. -
Feb 21, 2008 11:01 AM in response to The Gibbonby Reed Riddle,I'll check when I get home to make sure, but I have Bluetooh disabled (I think since I turned the machine on), and still have the problem. -
Feb 21, 2008 11:10 AM in response to dosersby Neal Jackson,I cannot find a single example of a completely standard configuration Mac Pro misbehaving (reboot upon wake).
Every one I have noted has always had added RAM or wireless mouse/keyboard or something that deviates from a basic configured 2GB RAM, 2600XT, wired devices machine.
Not to rule out the possibility, I'd say 100% of those people who have publicly reported a problem (of which I have read) have a BTO 'Pro.
I'm simply asking if anyone here has a machine specced as standard basic config on the Apple Online Store that misbehaves.
Not hearsay, simply someone stating they have the reboot problem on a standard Mac Pro.
I ask because two separate tech support guys (on different occasions) said categorically that it does not occur with basic configured machines and a fix is on the way (possibly within 48Hrs) for those troublesome BTO machines. -
Feb 21, 2008 11:15 AM in response to Neal Jacksonby dosers,Neil,
that's not true unfortunately.
This is happening, and you can replicate yourself, at Stock Mac Pro's in the Apple Stores. -

Although I've added things to my machine since purchase, it suffered from the "reboot from sleep" BEFORE I added anything, and someone here has posted that even machines in the Apple Stores misbehave.
Also, it's been reported in this thread that machines running Windows Vista natively (Boot Camp, not virtualized), don't do it, although those very same machines may do so when awakening while running the Mac OS.
That says two things to me:
1. It's clear that stock machines suffer the problem.
2. It's virtually certain it's a problem with the OS, not the hardware. -
Feb 21, 2008 11:29 AM in response to transplant6by Trinity,Neal, if you read the complete thread, (I know, it's boring) you will see how happy I was with my standard Mac Pro (with only Airport addeed but disabled), and how disappointed I felt when the problem began.
