Feb 22, 2008 6:42 PM in response to JimRobertsonby islk350,Agreed. I was simply pointing out that a UPS can cause issues that are superficially the same symptom.
The reverse logic would also apply then. Not every reboot from sleep will be fixed with the larger issue is. No doubt some will say "Apple did not fix the problem!" which would not be correct to first effects.
Power management is quite a large category. Most of sleep/wake issues are by definition power management issues but early rom calls, early OS calls and the coordination required can locate the problem anywhere... My guess, somewhere in the boot rom... but we'll see once it's fixed! -
Feb 23, 2008 1:28 AM in response to islk350by Neal Jackson,Curiously, and further to my enquiries with Apple tech support and their comments re BTO product only being effected (and an imminent fix), it is now impossible throughout Europe to purchase anything but a standard configured Mac Pro from European education stores.
If you try to place a BTO Pro in a shopping basket it returns an error. Standard config, no problems.
Is this the same in the USA? -

My replacement arrived yesterday afternoon, exactly one week to the hour from when FedEx picked up the old one, and I pleased to report that we've had our 1st successful wake this morning. Then again, it took the old one about the same amount of time to manifest its condition, so we won't break out the champaign just yet.
I did notice the wake was instant; almost as if it wasn't truly sleeping. No fans. I thought this was unusual and am certain the power indicator was pulsing. I left no applications open and let it sleep automatically after having applied all the updates and repaired permissions with Disk Utility. No pram or smc resets or other system elixirs. Stay tuned... -
Feb 23, 2008 5:33 AM in response to Chateaubugsby pmau,That's great news! Please keep us posted.

Feb 23, 2008 12:09 PM in response to Neal Jacksonby dosers,Nope, must have been a glitch;
You can order CTO system fine in the US - as well as in the German Store.....

Feb 23, 2008 12:11 PM in response to Chateaubugsby dosers,That would be great.
So, when mine wakes fine, it does wake up very quickly (much quicker than previous gen Mac Pro) as well, so not sure that alone is any different. Let us know how it goes after using it for a few days / week.
The downside is that if your unit really works fine, then we most likely have a hardware issue on our hands, which means everyone else having the problem will be forced to return theirs for replacement (hopefully AppleCare will be aware of it by then).....
All conjecture so far of course; systems delivered 2 weeks ago still have the problem... -
Feb 23, 2008 12:50 PM in response to dosersby Neal Jackson,Well, if I try and order with nVidia 8800GT and wireless keyboard and mouse I get:
"Hinweis!
Während Ihrer Sitzung ist ein Fehler aufgetreten. Klicken Sie auf den unten stehenden Link, um Ihren Einkauf fortzusetzen."
Bog standard configuration and a few others, excluding the above items, I can order. In UK, France and Germany it always returns the above message...in their respective languages, of course. -
Feb 23, 2008 4:52 PM in response to Neal Jacksonby dosers,Neal,
very odd - as I just tried and it works for me (in the German store for Deutschland, not Oesterreich)....
As I said, not doubting you, but I assume it's just a store glitch.....

Feb 23, 2008 6:36 PM in response to dosersby s_w_i_t_t_e_r_s,Well, I suppose you can add me to the list.
I have a Mac Pro that's about 40 days old. In my case, the problem just started about four days ago. I have four drives inside that have all been tested and are functioning properly. I have 8 GB of TransIntl RAM installed.
I've spoken with AppleCare and they want me to take it in to an Apple store. The problem there is that I no longer have the stock 320GB drive that came with the Mac Pro. I (foolishly) sold it along with my previous G5. So now I'm concerned that I won't be able to return/exchange the machine I've got, even if I simply tell them to give me one without a hard drive in it.
I guess one option is to buy a 320GB drive and stick it in there when I take the machine back. Should I remove all of my other internal drives? I'm so busy right now it's hard to imagine not having a computer for a few days.
Another option is to get AppleCare (I've been considering it anyways) and have Apple come out to my house. In that case, would I have to do a fresh install of Leopard before they come out? I'm afraid if I don't do that they will want me to do it before they replace the logic board or SMC.
Thanks for your help. -
Feb 23, 2008 10:02 PM in response to s_w_i_t_t_e_r_sby s_w_i_t_t_e_r_s,Okay, it's probably too soon to get my hopes up. But I tried one of the solutions earlier in this thread. It seemed bizarre and unlikely to help, but it was also easy and there was nothing to lose. I opened System Preferences, went to startup disk, selected a different internal drive as the startup drive, and then closed the panel. Then I opened it again and selected my original boot drive, and closed it.
I've now put it to sleep and woken it six times with no reboot. It wakes up very quickly from sleep, too. The reason I tried this in the first place is that the first time I noticed the sleep problem was after a crash when the computer booted up on an internal drive that I use as a clone of my normal boot drive. So I thought maybe the startup drive solution could possibly help me - and so far it seems like it did.
The true test will be sleeping it overnight and seeing if it wakes without a problem in the morning.
Oh yeah, one other thing I did is ran Cocktail and did a full cache cleaning and maintenance routine. I don't think that was it, though, because I had done that before to no avail. -
Feb 24, 2008 1:48 AM in response to transplant6by Redux,I have definitevely solved the issue with the reset of the System Management Controller (SMC) as proposed by Spectar. (MP 2.8 GHz 8 Core, OS X 10.5.1). Is near 1 month that I have not the problem.
• Reset the PRAM (Boot the machine and hold ALTCOMMAND+PR for 3 startup gongs)
• Reset the SMC -> http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304123-en
Thanks to Spectar -
Feb 24, 2008 2:14 AM in response to Reduxby dosers,So,
I am glad for you - and don't doubt that. But the fact is that for the vast majority of users having tried this 'fix' it did not work; or only did so for a few days.
If yours in fact held, it might be interesting to note if there is anything that you did not do or use since the reset that everyone else apparently is....
In other words, unless your issues was of a different nature (and manifested itself in the same way), there has to be something that triggers (or in your case does not) it.
Unfortunately, we're still up to speculation at this point at neither fixing nor replicating the issues has any consistent pattern - other than CTO as well as stock systems being affected, all the way down to the ones in the Apple Store...
But again, I am (truly) happy for you! -
Feb 24, 2008 6:35 AM in response to dosersby s_w_i_t_t_e_r_s,Unfortunately I'll have to wait another night to see if the solution I tried has worked for longer sleep periods. It's storming where I live and the power went out last night, so when I woke up the Mac Pro was off.
I'll try tonight and report back. -

Sadly, the honeymoon for the replacement was even shorter. It booted from sleep on only its second day! This time I logged out, manually put it to sleep, and after pushing the space bar 10 hrs later; utter disappointment as I heard the fans kick in followed by the startup Apple chime. -
Feb 24, 2008 9:59 AM in response to s_w_i_t_t_e_r_sby The hatter,Get a UPS. Protect your modem and other equipment, and if wired connection, from too much current coming down over Ethernet cable.
