Q: Dual Quad-core Mac Pro reboots from sleep

My brand-new Mac Pro nearly always restarts rather than waking up from sleep. Just now I left it to go to sleep by itself and came back two or three hours later. When I touched the space bar, it restarted.

I have an IOGear firewire hub plugged in with nothing attached to it and lots of USB devices plugged in.

    Hi almost sleepers,
Note me as one of those who is having sleep problem with new macpro purchased in early February. Worked perfectly at first then lost the sleep mode to reboots. Have tried all the fixes in this thread, except for switching drives; some of them fixed the problem for few days but now I'm back to "sleep and reboot." Have a case number from apple help and I'll call in the morning to say I'm back in nodoze mode. Specialist promised that I can try an archive install next time issue shows up and then it is time to take it to apple dealer, which happens to be 90 miles away, on the other side of the island on a road that takes two hours to drive. I like my mp and don't need sleep mode but for a couple of grand it should work. By the way, the specialist said it sounded like a hardware problem.

Specialist, smecialist. What's disturbing about this is that Apple has still not recognized the problem and they are still taking people through the same useless troubleshooting process when they call. I guess they have to do something. I thought we heard a few posts back that at least one of the level 2 techs at Apple did say that they were aware of the problem. But it seems that the last several people that have called have received the same old story of PRAM reset, archive & install, etc. etc. That's discouraging.

I can also live without sleep mode, but yes, for $3k+ I definitely expect the thing to work.

Thats right folks, so i set my cloned intel GUID tiger partition to my boot drive and i put my computer to sleep in leopard. After waking almost instantly computer restarted. CPu booted to tiger, i proceeded to put my computer to sleep and ... it worked. So despite not being able to run tiger on a mac pro 8 core, if you are a wizard of the highest order (or know how to download CCCloner) you can put your mac to sleep.

I just don't know if i should return my cpu tommorow as planned or not. What do you guys think. Seems like this makes it a software issue, but since i have had a g5 fail on me recently i am conflicted.

    Same deal here.
Restarts instead of waking - occasionally - I would say that the reboot from sleep happens three times a week, and my machine is on all day every day. Right now it's just a now and then nuisance and I'm not having any of the problems with blank screen or having to do a hard restart to get back up and running. When it's running, I'm loving it.

    MP 3GHz quadx2
500GB Hard Drive (upgrade from Apple)
    500GB Maxtor SATA 300 in bay 3
    Stock 2GHz RAM
Wacom 6x8 (often "lose" the cursor while using this - but lifting the pen and putting it back brings it back. This was much worse before I installed the latest driver. Hoping yet a newer driver will fix it totally)
stock Mighty Mouse is now unusable - typical problems with this POS

No wonder my Apple stock is in the cellar

The procedure that Apple had him do was a PRAM RESET and and SMC RESET - that's the same combination which I did which also fixed my 8-core.

sw_i_t_t_e_rs - you noted in your original response to my post that you had a wireless mouse... I wonder how many other folks have wireless devices in their setup... My first setup of the 8-core was using an Apple Wireless keyboard and a mouse. I switched back to the original wired config because I had borrowed those wireless devices from my other MAC PRO. I wonder if the use of a wireless keyboard/and or mouse triggers the problem.

I had switched back to me wired keyboard and mouse, but the sleep problems started by then. Anyway, I reiterate that doing the SMC and PRAM RESETS (while back on wired keyboard and mouse) did in fact correct the problem. I know others claim that it will come back, but its been weeks without any reoccurrence. If your read the threads - others claim to have had it work for them too. Maybe the problem is related to wireless - these new MAC PROs do have built-in bluetooth that is a new default.

I do have a wireless mouse but it isn't Bluetooth - it's a Logitech Cordless Laser MX. Also, it mostly sits in its cradle as 95% of the time I use a Wacom Graphire pen tablet. The keyboard is the Apple Aluminum wired that came with the Mac Pro. Perhaps when I have a bit more time to fool around I'll try another PRAM and SMC reset following the exact steps.

Anyone else tried it that way recently?

PRAM and SMC reset has been beaten to death already. It doesn't work.
I reset the PRAM/SMC and the reboot problem disappeared for the next 10 days, sleeping at least daily. Then it came back.

I still haven't seen this behaviour in Vista though I don't sleep the Mac as often in Windoze than I do in OS X.

I'm still interested in other dual-booter's experiences. Surely somebody is using bootcamp ?

Trinity, I have read your previous posts, but did you try to solve this problem by removing the memory you've bought?

I'm not Trinity, but a while back I removed all of my 3rd party RAM. After that, I went a full day without a reboot. When I put my 3rd party memory back in, I started having reboots again.

There are a few reasons I put it back in. One is that I do a lot of photography and graphic design work on my Mac, and 2 GB just isn't enough to get by on. Two is that several people have reported having this problem with only stock Apple RAM or only 3rd party RAM, so I had the sense that it was the SMC resets that naturally occurred while removing the RAM that produced the change, and not removing the RAM.

Of course logic would dictate asking the question "why didn't the SMC reset that occurred when you unplugged the machine to put the 3rd party RAM back in help, then?" I honestly don't know. I do know that I've tested the RAM with MemTest and it's fine, and I haven't had any problems with it. I also know that, as this thread indicates, the problem is intermittent so it's very difficult to know whether something I've done actually fixed the problem or whether it's just a temporary reprieve.

Frankly I've gotten tired of trying to figure it out and I'm hoping Apple does it for me.

I'm not sure the extra 3d party memory has anything to do with the reboot-from-sleep issues. My problems began BEFORE I added any additional memory to my Mac Pro. This thing comes and goes with no clear pattern as to what is it that is causing the behavior.

Apple, you need to come un with a firmware update or something once you know what is going on. Not everybody will be as patient as some of us have been.

Add my name to the list too. My Mac Pro rebooted when woken from sleep twice ( not in succession) in the first week I had it. I didn't do anything to try and fix it and it has been fine for the past two weeks. Now all of the sudden the issue is back with a vengeance, the last three times I've woken it up it has restarted. The only thing I changed is that I unplugged a USB DVD burner that was attached to it. Here's hoping it's a firmware fix, I don't want to be without this machine now that I've experienced two problem-free weeks with it.

I really hope every single person here is filling out a report on the official Mac Pro Feedback Page. These forums are simply user-to-user, and not the best way to give Apple the message that we are aware of this problem and want some answers.

PLEASE, take a moment and fill out the feedback form. If enough people do it, Apple pretty much has to recognized the issue and do something about it. Also, if you're a blogger please mention it on your blog. We have to get the word out.

Here's the feedback form address: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macpro.html

Yes. I second your advise: Let's ALL take a moment and fill out the feedback forum with our own reboot-from-sleep issues and the things we've tried (most of them in vain) to have our machines back in working order.

    MacPro 8 core 2.8GHz (early 2008) w/ 8800 GT

I have the reboot from sleep problem along with a list of other issues that have come up in the last few days. I reset the PRAM and SMC and am still having issues. Sometimes, when I put it to sleep for long periods, it wakes up with the resolution set to 600x800. Also, after a several hour sleep a few days ago, the screen was shaky. I shut down and rebooted onto my windows drive in bay 2 and there was a line that would work its way down the screen slightly changing the color. I restarted several times and the problem persisted. When I started it the next morning the problem was gone. I have also had times when I started or restarted the computer and gotten a black screen.

I spoke to apple about a week ago and the woman I spoke to had no idea about the RAW problem. With the extra problems I am having I am tempted to try to return this computer even though I am past the 14 day period.

I've started to have a few strange problems as well that aren't related to reboot from sleep (or not apparently related, at least).

All of a sudden this morning the dock stopped appearing and hiding when I run my cursor to the bottom of the screen, even though that's how I have it set up and that's what it's been doing for weeks.

At the same time, when I click on a menu in the menu bar, and scroll down, the menu items are not highlighted. I can click on a menu item and activate it, but as I'm moving the cursor down the menu it does not highlight as it should.

Has anyone seen anything like this?
