I've only been using my new Touch for a week and I tried to download the January update, which failed and I got the message that I needed to restore it and all my music, etc. would be wiped out. So I clicked restore but then got the message that it could not be restored, unknown error (2001). Other forums suggest trying to restore from another computer. The screen is black and nothing is happening. When I connect to iTunes, the screen shows the cord pointing to the iTunes icon, but nothing else. All was OK until I attempted to download this update. Any suggestions?
I am having the exact same problem, and no one seems to have an answer. If I can't find an answer to fix this, I think I will take it back and forget about it. As did your itouch, mine was working fine, then asked me to restore and once I did that, all I see on the screen is the usb cable pointing to the Itunes logo. When I plug in the Itouch, my computer does not recognize the Itouch at all. Please let me know if you find a solution, before I send mine flying across the living room!
Sounds like you both need to reinstall iTunes. I've had problems in the past when an iPod failed to be restored and reinstalling iTunes remedied the problem.
I tried reinstalling iTunes but that did not help. Still same result. I am going to try to restore on my Mac at work and see what happens. Thanks for the reply, though!
I also tried reinstalling Itunes! That's it! I'm taking returning the Itouch and getting my money back today! I have been researching this particular problem, and there are dozens of people that are having the same issue, and there doesn't seem to be an answer! Good luck! Thanks for your replies!
I would try removing Itunes and then installing it again and when you have a fresh copy of 7.6 installed and a reboot of your computer do the following.
1. Turn iPod Touch OFF completely.
2. Plug iPod Touch into PC/MAC while still off.
3. Turn iPod touch on, then IMMEDIATELY do the following steps
4. Hold the 'Home button' and 'sleep/wake' button together for atleast 5 seconds.
5. The Apple logo will appear
6. When this happens release the 'sleep/wake' button BUT KEEP HOLD OF 'HOME' BUTTON
7. Your iPod will reboot (Apple logo)
6. iTunes will recognise iPod in 'Recovery mode'
8. You will be able to 'restore' your iPod Touch now.
Well, I was able to restore the settings by connecting to my iMac at the office. Now I'm going to see if I can add back the music I have on the home computer. And I will NOT try to update with the January special stuff they offer!
If you are having the same problem I did, try restoring with another Mac. Good luck!
