Blocking icmp ping requests

Welcome to Apple Discussions. I believe that the application to which you refer is called Brickhouse. It's actually a great application but doesn't allow for the granularity of control that you and I prefer. The ipfw command for blocking pings is:

sudo ipfw add 7000 deny icmp from any to any in icmptypes 8

Of course you should change the rule number to fit your ruleset. Other icmptypes can be specified in a comma-delimited list.

Anti-trust laws should be approached with exactly that attitude.

And the non-Unix way is just to mark the box in the Firewall tab of the Sharing pane in System Preferences (I believe the option to block pings is new as of Tiger)

I am done with the command but i want ipfw block icmp requests everytime my machine boots. Should i write a shell script and put it in /System/Library/StartupItems or append a line to /etc/rc?

A Startup Item works fine if you follow the instructions in Creating a Startup Item.

What do you think you're gaining by blocking ICMP?

There are many valid reasons why ICMP exists. Turning it off is rarely a good idea.

That's what I do. You should avoid editing /etc/rc if at all possible.
