applications crawling

Guys..
it is soo annoying...

I bought a macbook a month ago with great expectations and enthusiasm.
But, i really am disappointed with it's performance.

My applications are quitting abruptly asking me to re-launch or ignore.

i have installed Flip4Mac and playing .avi files with the quicktime player and it's quitting abruptly, whereas the same file is playing fine with VLC player.

Yahoo messenger is quitting suddenly,

i really am afraid to install any big applications into it, as it is crawling with these small applications.

And, the booting speed is also not that effective. I have 2GB RAM 2.2GHz 250GB HD ,leopard ,It is taking toomuch time to boot(30sec or so), and the same with launching applications. if i do a HELP with some text in it, it is loading till eternity, now what is that suppose to be??.

I close the application and it is still there in the dock unless i do a CMD+Q, now what is that??

Is this normal?? if so.. i have nothing else but to blame Apple. if not, perhaps i gotta get used to it or Is there any conventional way of dealing your macbook??
Please help me guys.

Hi

This behaviour isn't normal, but there are a number of steps which might solve the problem.

First of all, I'd reset the system manager controller, following these instructions:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319

Next, I'd download one of the free or cheap shareware tune up tools. My particular favourite is Leopard Cache Cleaner from http://www.northernsoftworks.com/ but there are several others to choose from. Use the program to clear out the cache files, run the daily/weekly/monthly maintenance scripts, and any other options which look like they might help.

If that doesn't work, then perhaps you have some startup application which is eating up processor cycles. The cleanup tool should give you the option of turning all of these off.

If that doesn't help then come back.

First thing:

"Only go on to reset the SMC if you've tried all of the steps listed here and the computer still isn't working.

1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)
3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)

Only perform an SMC reset on the computer if none of the above steps resolved the situation."

I dont find any difficulty in making my macbook work or quit the application... so i dont think this is the better option now.

second: Out of my ignorance... as far as i know the system maintainance is done by macbook on its own right??...anywayz.. i'd try what you've suggested.
Thank you.

Hi

Do the SMC reset anyway. It is quite safe.

All macs run basic maintenance scripts at 3am each morning. However, most mac users have their computers turned off or sleeping at 3am so in practice they rarely get run. Hence, it becomes necessary to run them manually. The maintenance scripts don't clear out the cache files. Clearing caches is also safe and won't do any harm, but it might just solve your issue.
