Apple TV 2.0 ??

I just purchased an apple tv (yesterday) Jan 21 '08.

It has software ver. 1.1??

Do the "new ATV's" also have to wait for this 2.0 upgrade?

or did I get an old one?

Thanks for the insight.

I still wish they would give us a date. Having no date makes me nervous. I'm in the software business myself and understand that not committing to a date this close to the release could (but may not) mean they still have a few kinks to work out. I'm not THAT nervous though. My life does not revolve around this product (yet) so I can wait until they're ready.

I think the bigger problem is that it was not ready when they announced it. What is 2 more weeks going to buy. I work in the software field and the only thing going on 2 weeks before a major release is final testing. No code changes for sure unless it is a major bug. If that happens then it will be another x days or weeks of testing for final acceptance.

I think they are just doing a phased release of this to iTunes first then a few weeks later to ATV. We will probably get the update next week.

Could be software is in the can....

The two-week gap between the start of the rentals and the release of the Apple TV software upgrade doesn't make much sense from a software development standpoint. If they had a stable beta one would think that they could have moved the release date up to coincide with the start of the rentals. If they don't have a stable beta, there's no guarantee that it will be ready in another two weeks.

Of course, it's also possible that it has nothing to do with the software itself. It could have been a marketing decision to withhold the software upgrade until the new Apple TV is released.

Interesting discussion. I appreciate the feedback that the target date is "by the end of January (or beginning of Feb)."

I, too, am beginning to get anxious having purchased the 160G model after seeing the keynote.

Also working in this industry, I agree that it is most likely a delay in order to get the store updated to a respectable level with rentals. Looks like there are less than a 100 movies out there now... Would be better to launch the new Take 2 AppleTVs with a more substantial base...

Remember that Steve mentioned that they were fervently converting movies at the time of MacWorld. While they likely have a huge server farm cranking through the encoding this would still take a monumental amount of time... Especially with anywhere from a few to many of the studios likely to have closed the contracts in the final hours before Steve's keynote... Pure speculation... But wouldn't surprise me in the least if this was close to the reality.

One last comment... on rentals... I have rented three movie and have watched one on my HP notebook (the work standard) and the other two on my iPhone. I did this while traveling internationally and with changes in my time and time zone. Note that I did NOT have a single problem with my rentals.

I rented 1 on my G5 and sync'd to my iPhone before leaving and then rented the other two from my PC on the trip. One VERY nice feature is that you can move Rented movies to your iPhone from multiple computers, even ones that are not synced with your iTunes library. This is really, really smart and convenient... The only catch is that you cannot "free up" more space for rented movies with computers that are not synced to your iTunes library (to remove watched TV shows etc).

All in all, movie rentals has been a great experience. All we need now is the Apple TV update and a vast library to chose from... Just for the record... iTunes + Apple TV/iPhone + Movie Rentals = the death of Netflix for my family.

Anxiously awaiting the updates...

Uh, you claim to have mac's since "seasoned since 1988", so you should know there never is a release date for software.

Hoping for one is a lesson in futility...

I usually try to steer clear of any kind of controversy on message boards, but you kind of stepped over a line with what to me seems like an attack against my intelligence and credibility. So I offer to you the following quotes from various Apple press releases posted on their own web site:

"January 6, 2004— ... iLife ‘04 will be available on January 16 for a suggested retail price of $49..."

"June 21, 2004—Apple® today announced Apple Remote Desktop™ 2 ... will be available in July"

"April 12, 2005—Apple® today announced that Mac OS® X version 10.4 “Tiger” will go on sale Friday, April 29, beginning at 6:00 p.m..."

"October 16, 2007—Apple® today announced that Mac OS® X Leopard will go on sale Friday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m..."

I won't list others I found. I'll give you "rarely" and I'll acknowledge that they do seem to reserve date announcements for major OS updates (and even then they are short notice), but don't tell me Apple "never" announces dates for software and imply that I don't know Apple after 20 years of faithfully purchasing their products! Discussion boards are meant to be helpful and are no place for personal attacks against people you don't even know. Sadly, with this post, I've stooped to your level.

That being said, I took the liberty of reading some of your other posts and overall, you appear to be a very helpful member of the discussion boards, so I'm going to just assume you were "in a mood" or something when you posted this one.
