Are there any builders or tradesmen that use an iphone on a daily basis?

I install fireplaces and woodburners for a living. Many of my phones last little more than 3 months without having to send them away for repair.

They are not abused and to look at them, they look brand new. The problem is dust, grit and sand. It works it's way into the speakers and mic and causes them to distort to a point where the phone is unusable.

What i need to know is if there is anyone in a similar trade to me that has used the iphone for 2 or 3 months and finds it is still functioning as good as the day it was bought. Has anyone suffered from buggered speakers and mic's or anything else?

I look forward to your responses as this may be the start of an iphone purchase if the news is good!

Thanx for your reply. I've seen these cases but no matter what case you fit the mic and speaker need to be 'open to the air' as to be able to transmit sound. I found that the old Nokia's were great......i had these for years and the speakers never messed up. All these new phones are a nightmare.

My problems is i don't want to buy a hacked Iphone and then the speaker bugger up and end up with a paper weight that i can't get repaired.

I understand what you are saying but I've taken out a new contract not so long ago and got a Nokia 6500 classic that has now packed up.

The problem is that i use around 1000 minutes a months. For me to get these minutes with the iphone my monthly contract would be £55. I already get these minutes for £35 a month. Therefore the iphone would end up costing me £509.

I can buy one for £269. In fact.....i could buy another if mine broke and still not be much worse off.

Plus there are many third party apps i'd like to use. I also think that it should be illegal to do what Apple are doing with the Iphones. Many other countries have out-lawed this kind of thing.

I'd simply just like to know if the Iphone is suitable for someone in my kind of trade. If it isn't i won't buy one.

I'm a contractor with a masonry specialty in New York. I use my Iphone to take pictures of work sites and justify my bid prices on jobs with certain general contractors. With the Iphone I can go to a site take pictures and email them to the GC's estimator along with my bid price for the job. I have been in dusty and dirty places, I've dropped my Iphone a couple of times with no real problems except the plastic snap case from Belkin comes apart and you put the phone back in the case and snap it back together. I would recommend a Jabra blue tooth head set. You keep the phone in your pocket and the head set takes all the immediate dust and dirt abuse. I've had an Iphone since 6/30/07. The first one had firmware issues and lasted about a month. The replacement has lasted and served me very well.

Wait, what do you mean by "no matter what case you fit the mic and speaker need to be open to the air to be able to transmit sound"? With the OtterBox, it totally covers the iPhone. There's a clear plastic shield to prevent dust and dirt from gathering up and there's no loss in the volume. From your working conditions, I really think OtterBox will work best for you. If still interested in getting one, I know a place that sells it for $10 cheaper than most other places and they have free shipping. Here's the link for you to check out: http://semsons.blogspot.com. There's coupon codes and some nice reviews for OtterBox cases.
