Japanese IME

On page 21 of the Users Guide, it says that iPhone supports Japanese IME and refers to page 98 on how to turn on language keyboard on. But, on the setup page ther are only English, English (UK), French, German and Italian.

Does anyone know if there is a patch or upgrade? The main I reason I invested in the iPhone was because of what I was led to believe in the manual which I downloaded from the apple.com site.

Thanks.

The actual iPhone has not yet caught up with what is described in the User Guide, no Japanese IME is available at this time. The iPod touch has had this since day one, so presumably it should be coming to the iPhone soon. You can tell Apple your views on this here:

A web app for Japanese email can be found here:

Actually, if the japanese web page is correctly encoded, a japanese IME keyboard does come up for input.

This of course doesn't help for Mail or SMS, but it shows that the IME keyboard is already in the iPhone. Its just not that useful yet for most of us 😝
