My new MP motherboard = prototype ?

Hi
I received the new mac pro few days ago and I noticed something weird in CPU-Z and others system infos softwares under Windows :

The board's version is " Proto1". So could it mean that I have a prototype board in it ? Or it's the same for everybody ?

MacPro3,1, Mac OS X (10.5.1), MacBook1,1 // Server PC

No idea, but it looks like you have the single-processor version. Can you tell us if it has a second processor socket?

Yes there is a 2nd socket. I've already talked about this in macrumors forum (my nick on it is sweedigel).

Remember, on nearly every other system that CPU-Z is running on, it would be going through a standard PC BIOS. The Mac BIOS is different and so is the firmware. It may be confused by that BIOS. Boot Camp and other solutions for running Windows on a Mac are virtualization solutions.

I never use BootCamp to install Vista 64-bit. I put in a new hard drive, remove OS X, format it in Vista and that is it. Where then is it virtualized? EFI, and now UEFI 2.01, has support for older technology. Intel has cpu level "virtualization" but I confess I don't know what that entails.

Boot Camp when it initially was there setup the firmware to accept the Windows operating system in a virtualized mode. Windows would not have installed if it hadn't been for Boot Camp's setup procedures.

CPU-Z reports the same sorts of system info in Windows that can be be seen in OS X using Hardware Monitor's system Info window.

I tried Everest too, and it appears that "Proto1" is an information given by the DMI. Isn't DMI usually stocked into the Bios ?

The MLB has 2MB of flash EEPROM that contains many pieces of data, including....

BootROM ( EFI firmware )

SMC Firmware

Apple copyright notices

System ID strings ( model, family, board rev )

Serial Number ( encoding build date and plant ID )

Hardware Monitor gives somewhat more info than CPU-Z.

Thanks man, I had never heard of this app. So, since there's no need to install bootcamp, windows and cpuz, can a 2008 MacPro owner tell us if his board version is Proto1 ?
In HardwareMonitor, you can check it at:
"Window" menu > "Show System Info" > "Management Info" > "System Board".
Hope I'll get some reports.
