SMTP authentication Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 and 10.4.10 Apple Mail clients

Since similar topic is closed for replies, I had a problem that some users couldn't send email from Apple Mail through my 10.3.9 server. I thought it was just by chance that all of them had 4 letter usernames, but at the end I found out that AppleMail on 10.4.10 has a bug.

How I found out? I create account in Thunderbird on the same machine and I could send emails. Then I upgraded it to 10.4.11 and AppleMail also could send emails.
