Printing to a Ricoh 2018 via Appletalk

I'm having trouble getting a Ricoh 2018 to print via Appletalk.

My network looks like this:

I have a Netcomm ADSL modem with 4 built in ethernet ports. I have an Airport Extreme connected to one port, through which I connect my MacBook Pro. I have the printer connected to one of the other ethernet ports.

I have the printer ethernet interface configured to use Appletalk.

When I try and add the printer, it doesn't show up on the first screen, or when I select additional printers and select appletalk, it does not show up there either.

when i check my airport connection in network setup, it shows appletalk enabled, but does not show a zone - this is grayed out and empty.

the area in the printer setup for Appletalk shows "Local Appletalk Zone".

Do i need to create a "local" zone, or am i missing something here?

The printer has previously worked with my old PowerBook G4 running Panther, and an airport express.

Any ideas?

thanks

This is the most likely problem:
The Netcomm ADSL modem sounds like it is a router, like the Airport Extreme is. A router has one external IP address and shares that connection with multiple internal IP addresses. Your Extreme has created a second local network, isolated from the Netcomm one. To fix this, go to Airport Admin and click Off "Distribute IP addresses." Now, all computers and the printer will be in the local network of the Netcomm. (You may need to reboot everything to get them recognized.)
