Personal Web sharing does not start

We've been running personal web sharing without problems on multiple macs until recently. For no reason we can see, on one of our mac minis, personal web sharing was turned off by the OS. When we enable it, it just hangs in starting mode, but never starts.

We have repaired permissions, but that didn't help.

Any suggestions

Harvey--

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

Have you tried looking in the Apache logs? They're at "/var/log/httpd", and you can use the Console application to look at them. Apache is very good about telling you if it can't start up.

You can also open a Terminal window and type the following command, followed by the "Enter" key:

/usr/sbin/apachectl configtest

That command will tell you if you have any syntax errors in the various config files:

Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/username.conf
Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/seconduser.conf
Syntax OK

If you have any troubles figuring out the errors, post back with the messages from this config test.

Your advice was perfect. We ran the test & located the error. It was something wrong with the httpd.conf file, which we use to change the default port number for web access.

Several ? characters slipped themselves in, we have no idea how, but after their removal, all worked well.

Thank yoo very much for responding to our post.
Have a great day.
