Capturing video from Canon GL2

So heres the issue....
My GL2 is connected via 4pin to 6pin firewire. Directly to the macbook pro. If I turn on the camera (set to vcr/playback)before lauching FCE HD, the application fails to launch. The colorful disc just spins and spins. Finnally I have to force quit the application.
If I launch FCE and then turn on the camera. Then File>capture, the capture window appears. In the status area it reads "vtr ok" but in the window it says "preview disabled". At this point the controlls in the capture window will run the camera, rewind, play, and such. If I hit "stop" in the window, the spinning disc returns and spins and spins. And again I must force quit the application.
So what gives???
Heres the thing also. Last week I hooked up the camera and it played fine in the capture window. I was only testing it out, so I didn't actually try uploading footage to the computer. Oh but also, before hooking up to the mac there was no sound from the camera. Once in the capture window I was able to view video but no audio coming through the mac. After disconnecting however the camera suddenly produced sound.
Hmmmmm.....
Someone please help.
My settings in FCE are easy set up NSTC.

macbook pro, Used mostly for video editing.

I'm using mac os x 10.4.9
I have a western digital mybook pro edition 500gb external harddrive hooked up.
The mac is a macbook pro.
Other than that I don't have anything else hooked up to it.

Lets see...
If the camera is turned on before I launch FCE HD 3.5 the application fails to launch at all. Last night I couldn't even force quit FCE. I had to shut down by holding down the power button.
If I launch FCE first then turn on the camera, I goto FILE>Capture, the capture window appears. VTR OK is at the bottom of the window. BUt the viewing area says preview disabled.
The controlls in the capture window will work the camera. PLay Rewind FFWD, but if I stop then the spinning colorful disc appears until I force quit the application.
Any suggestions.

Tom, thanks for the info. My GL2 progressively stopped capturing in the last few months, and has pretty much quit. I have found a "back door" to tricking my computer to recognize my camcorder so I can capture. I don't know if it is wise to use this though. I have found that if I plug in my usb the computer seems to recognize the camcorder, then unplug it, and plug in my firewire and i'm good to go. not sure why this works but it seems to. If this fails I will go ahead and try the express drive for the firewire like you suggested. I'm not sure exactly what this is but I'm sure I can go to a computer store and find out.

By the way I, I got your FCE 3.5 book over christmas and have enjoyed working my way through it. Your neighbor in southern oregon. Joe

So I called the apple support line last night and the fella I spoke to helped correct my situation in just a few minutes.
This may help out Johnboy also.
All he had me do was check my update status. And update everything that pertained to FCE. Which seemed to be every update except for the iTunes update.
Anyway... as soon as I updated the problem was solved.
Thanks Tom for getting back to me. Much appreciation.
