Security Update 2005-008 Conflict with Norton Firewall

Since I installed the new Security/Java Update for 10.3.9 I can no longer access the internet through Safari or IE unless I disable Norton Personal Firewall. Any advice?

Standard internet communications typically go through two ports: 80 and 8080.

This will however not be the case if you need to visit secure sites (such as banks) where I think from memory it tends to be port 443.

Make sure these are open in Norton FW, though I personally use NetBarrier, so I can not help you in regards to how to check this.

Also are your pages partially opening or is the connection being refused outright? Checking the activity window might give you some insight on what is happening.

(I also feel dirty for not slamming Norton products...oops!)

Eme,

Thanks for your advice. I am using Norton Internet Security 1.0. I am running Panther 10.3.9 OS. Are you positive that Norton is not compatible with Panther? If so, I will definitely remove it and activate the built-in Mac OS firewall. Is that going to be sufficient protection? I have a small home network (2 macs). My iMac G4 is running Jaguar and my G5 is running Panther. I have Norton Antivirus installed on my iMac (absolutely NO problems at all) and Norton Internet Security installed on my G5.

Marilyn, Welcome..
I am not here to bash any Programs that other people choose to use..
But there have been severa reports about Norton and Mac OSX not playing well together..
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=217237
This is just one of thousands of reports...
I would trash Norton..
The Built in Firewall that comes with OSX is hard to beat and it does a very very good job...It is probably all you need...
If you deside you need a utility for your Mac look at
Tech Tool Pro for OSX
Disk Warrior..

Hope this helps..
If by chance you decide to get rid of Norton...

Hi, Don..
Thanks so much for all of your advice. I only have Norton Internet Security 3.0.3 installed--not Norton Utilities, which seems to be causing most of the problems with other users' computers. I am running Panther which is not as good as Tiger when it comes to the OS firewall. I am avoiding upgrading to Tiger because then I will probably face a whole new range of other problems! I have Cocktail, which I set up to run once a week, and Disk Warrior (which I have never used). I will have to carefully read the link on maintenance and follow-through on backups, etc.
Thanks again. I apprec iate your taking the time to reply to my post.

Hi Marilyn,

I am personally afraid of Norton. My experience w/ it was not good. Some say NAV is okay. I know Norton/Utilites is said to be a real issue. I do not mean to be an alarmist. I would think it is good to check out the info available.
It was recommended to me that I removed NAV back in March, I did.
Here are a couple of links to threads about different Norton products,on Discussions
Good Luck.
