After dialing up, I get cannot find server?

I am using a G4 with OS X 3.5 and an exterternal zoom 56k fax modem. In the past I've gotten excellent dial up connections but now everytime I dial up and try to go to google or yahoo, I get a message saying that the server cannot be found. Thus I cannot get online. When I dial up, I get connected and pass authentication. A friend told me to go the the command shell and type PING www.google.com and I get cannot find host. HELP! What next! I can connect just fine using the same account on my wifes PC.
