"Cleaning up" an IMac

Are there ways to "clean" an IMac. I have had mine for a couple years now. Not a big computer guy. Just seems that it takes awhile for some things to open (Excel, Word, Internet sites, etc.). I get the colored wheel a lot. Wondering if I can do something to get it to run faster. I think I keep updated in things (at least what the computer prompts me to update).

IMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I will assume you have the Early 2006 iMac. Have the Firmware Updates been applied? How full is your hard drive? How much RAM does your iMac have?

Have you tried setting up a new user account (System Preferences>Accounts) to test the speed of opening and using a browser without all the bookmarks and other baggage?

Have you tried replacing your Network configuration with a new one?

Appearance of the colored wheel might indicate a need for additional RAM, or the need for you to have fewer apps open at the same time.
