pre-owned ipod touch.

Hi, Was hoping somebody could help. My wife has just bought me an unwanted gift of an ipod touch. How can i re-register it ? Also when plugged into my mac to update software to 1.1.3.., error -50 appears but all the solutions seem to involve windows ?
