Why Can't Mail Open PowerPoint Attachment?

Note that I'm running 10.3.9, so my Mail version is with that OS. The problem is this: I composed an email with a PowerPoint file as an attachment and sent it off. But, when I try to open the attachment in the copy in the Sent folder, I get the following:

"PowerPoint cannot open the file Macintosh HD:Users:<my name>:Library:Mail:POP- <my email addr.>:Sent Messages.mbox:<email title>.mimeattach:<name of PP file>."

What is going on? More importantly, are my recipients going to run into the same problem? PowerPoint has no problem opening the 56 KB file, otherwise. It just won't open thru my Mail app.

I solved the problem by creating a new message, using copy & paste of the text of the old message into the new one. I then tried adding the attachment. When I opened the attachment in the new message, PowerPoint opened the file. I think the file became corrupted the first time it was added as an attachment. I've saved the new message as a draft in case any recipients have trouble opening their attachments from the first message & need a resend.
