Getting connectable for torrent seeding with Airport Extreme N

If someone here could assume I am a complete computer moron (which I actually am not) and walk me through how to get port forwarding setup correctly on my Base Station Extreme N I would really appreciate it. I struggled with this with my Airport G but finally was able to be connectable and seed (legal) torrent files, but since getting the N I have had NO luck whatsoever. I am only partially Apple-literate, but their routers seem to be more difficult to deal with when it comes to torrent seeding.

And I do not want to (nor should I have to) do some elaborate config changes, call my ISP and get a single IP or any of that BS. I can get this to work with a Netgear router, I certainly should be able to with an Apple product.

Thanks and forgive my stupidity on this matter.

If you search on the topic of port mapping (let alone using torrents) with the Airport Extreme N base station, you will find many people seem to be having problems getting port mapping to work on this base station. Likely you haven't done anything wrong with your many (unsuccessful) attempts.

Rather than tearing your hair out - if you got this to work with a Netgear router (and you still have that router) consider using it as the device that shares your internet connection. The Base Station's router is fine for basic home network needs, but seems inferior to most non-Apple routers for advanced users. Connect the Airport Extreme Base Station N to the Netgear router, and configure the Base Station to function as a bridge device (ie its built in router disabled).

Henry,
Thanks for making me feel a little better, I sadly no longer have that router. Is it just not easily possible to make this work for the N? That is just hard for me to believe, but I guess it could be a purposeful thing by Apple. If anyone else has any simple solution I would welcome it, meanwhile I am going to shop for cheap Netgear routers on eBay 🙂

Thanks again.

I just went into the Airport Utility->Your Base Station->Advanced->Port Mapping. Then you need to create a new "allowed" service by pressing the little + at the bottom of the list. Public and private UDP/TCP ports should all be the same, and should be in an acceptable range (use something in the 50,000-60,000 range). Enter your IP address (make a static one for your seeding machine) and click "Continue."

That "worked" for me, as I am visible in Azureus and to my tracker. There is one oddity though, when I am seeding, every 30 minutes or so, the base station oranges out (restarts). It pops back on in under 20 seconds, but it is a real hassle when I am playing xbox live or something.

Not a great router in my opinion, however 3 of my former Linksys WRT54s broke.. So maybe i'm just unlucky!

Happy Seeding.
