previous backups not recognized after complete re-install via Time Machine

I used Time Machine to migrate from one Macbook Pro to another. Restore worked flawlessly, but now Time Machine no longer recognizes my previous backups. I poked around a bit and noticed that it seems to be using the fsUUID to match backups with disks. Since I am on a totally new physical disk, is there any way to make Time Machine recognize my earlier backups, and match them to my new system's fsUUID?

Thanks

Macbook Pro 17", Mac OS X (10.5.1)
