I used to primarily recommend to people--off the 12-inch PowerBook forum, because of its delicateness--to have those professionally installed. But after doing my own installation on my recently acquired 15-inch PowerBook, I say go for it and do it yourself!

The problem is the version PowerBook you have. The early models had this "latch" on the inside over the optical drive area that had to be released a special way in order to pop the top case off. That would result in bending/warping the casing if done incorrectly.

The newer ones (2005) 1.5GHz/1.67GHz, like mine, don't have that latching thing and it's easy to just take off the top case and install a new hard drive or replace an optical drive. (As I did).

This would be your source:

1. 1.5/1.67GHz

2. 1.0 to 1.5GHz

I linked to the main guides. You will want to click on "Hard Drive Replacement" on the lists.
