download mac os x panther from apple

I have a PowerBook G4 laptop running Mac os X panther. I would like to reinstall the os clean on the laptop but the disks are scratched up bad. Is there anywhere on apple that I can download the software and use the current license I have to reinstall panther?

I was afraid of that. I don't have a apple care plan. Guess I will just have to make due. Thanks anyway though.

Hi Bobby:

You could try duplicating your CDs using Toast, or some other disk-burning app (I'm sure you can use Disk Utility, but I don't know what setting to use to make the resultant disk bootable).

I've never tried this with the Panther install disks, but I have made new copies of Norton Utilities (strictly for OS 9) when the original got too scratched to boot from.

If your disk is too badly scratched to copy, then use one of the coupons that came with your Mac (or retail copy of Panther) to get a new disk for $20. It will be the latest version of Panther with all software updates already on the disk.
