Imac & G3 tower connect hard drive

Hi,

I have a Imac running 10.4 and a blue and white g3 tower running os9. Is there any way to connect them via firewire to the same external hard drive?
The G3 is used in conjunction with a scanner that uses a SCSI connection. I'd like to be able to scan film using the G3, save it to the external hard drive and then using the Imac access that file.
Is there any way to do this?

Thanks

imac, Mac OS X (10.4)

Unplug the FireWire drive from one machine prior to connecting it to the other, or keep it plugged into one machine and set up file sharing through a network between the computers. A FireWire drive shouldn't be connected to multiple computers simultaneously over a non-network connection unless the drive is specifically designed for that, as data loss may occur.

I tried using a crossover cable to connect the computers without any luck. They can't see each other. I contacted apple care and they said that it's impossible to connect the two, that the OS are incompatible. Are they correct? The Imac is a Core 2 duo running OS 10.4.10 and the G3 is the Blue and White tower (Yosemite ?) running OS 9 (It also has 10.1.5 installed ).
