Entering URLs causes Safari to freeze (spinning wheel)

Can anyone explain why Safari freezes up whenever I type in a URL address? I can go from site to site using links and the address bar just fine. The problem began yesterday with my older version of Safari and remains with my newly installed version 3.X. Thanks much.

Hi GeneGuy,

Go to these 2 locations to see if you have any 3rd party extensions and move anything present in them onto your Desktop to deactivate them:

/Users/YourUsername/Library/InputManagers/
/Library/InputManagers/

Restart Safari to pick up the change. If it works now, you can try moving the items back one by one until you find the culprit.

Failing that, one quick test you can do to help narrow down things is to try Safari in another user account.

This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> \[+\] to create a test one (and \[-\] to remove it if needed)

Hi GeneGuy,

Just to double check those folders don't exist, they would be located at:

Hard drive -> Library -> InputManagers

and/or

Hard drive -> Users -> Your username -> Library -> InputManagers

(Spotlight on OS X 10.5 won't look in these locations by default, but I think you're using 10.4, right?)

Assuming neither of the above are present, the first thing I'd try is to trash the Safari preferences file:

Hard drive -> Users -> Your username -> Library -> Preferences -> com.apple.Safari.plist

If that doesn't help, try resetting Safari via the Safari menu -> Reset Safari... option. Be careful NOT to check the item 'Remove saved name and passwords' otherwise you'll have to reenter them all...

Good luck and let us know how things work out!

Hi iBod,
It worked! I opted for the "Reset" feature under the Safari menu and now I can indeed place URLs into the proper box and everything works. Thanks so much, iBod!

I am still curious as to why I couldn't find any folders named Inputmanager (or Input manager) either by looking where you suggest or by searching. The computer with the problem was a Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11. Neither could I find such folders on the mac I've been communicating to you with (the MacBook Pro running 10.4.11). I've checked off that my question has been answered. Thanks again, you're a great help.

Hi GeneGuy,

No probs, glad that did the trick 🙂

Sorry, I forgot to mention that these folders do not exist by default. If a program is installed that makes use of them then they will be created. So, it's perfectly normal for them to be missing. Hope that clears that up 🙂
