Ok to charge iPhone with iPod charger?

Ok to charge iPhone with iPod charger?

I was looking at the specs on both:

iPhone AC adapter: 5 volts @ 1 amp

iPod (5th gen) AC adapter: 12 volts @ 1 amp

Obviously considering the numbers don't match and the total power output is not the same (12 watts for ipod adapter and 5 watts for iPhone adapter), it is not good to charge the iPhone on the ipod adapter.

But I was wondering, can the iPhone handle it? Has anybody tried it?

Or do I have to keep charging the iPhone through the computer (I have no more outlets for the iPhone AC adapter to plug into)

The reason I am asking is that the iPhone is taking a long time to charge through the USB port on the computer. I plugged in to charge this afternoon and it is only about 80% done. This is the first time I am charging it since I got it though so that might be the cause.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't use the charger that comes with the phone to be on the safe side. There are numerous posts of people frying their phones using chargers and accessories that work with iPods but not iPhones.

Do not use your iPod wall charger for charging your iPhone.

Is your computer set to sleep after a period of inactivity - not just the computer's screen?

If you will be using your iPhone more often now, you can always switch this - charge your iPod with your computer.

No the computer stays on, I am just in a habit of turning off the screen to conserve power.

The iPhone is plugged into my screen (it has USB ports), so I just have to let the screen stay on from now on.

You're welcome.

Plugging your iPhone into one of the USB ports available on your monitor may be the problem. Try plugging your iPhone into one of the USB ports on your computer instead to see if this makes any difference.

The Ipod and iPhone chargers are the same. there is no problem using the ipod charger with the iPhone or the other way around. If anyone tells you that it's not ok you should ignore them cos they don't know what they are talking about. i always use my ipod wall charger with my iphone, the iphone one has not been out the box, and i have had no problems. if in doubt ask Apple they will tell you it's ok to use ipod charger.

I tried using a 2nd generation Nano charger and the iPhone got extremely hot, couldn't even touch it and when smelled it smelled singed.

I DO NOT recommend using any charger that does not have the Works with iPhone on it.

I have a 60 gb video ipod. Don't know what generation. I use the usb cable that came with it to charge my iphone throught the computer all the time. I also use it to sync my phone, with out the dock. It works fine for me.

i got an UK 8GB iPhone and use the iPhone charger, i just looked at it and it the details at the bottom say "iPod charger".

I'm guessing all NEW iPod's use these USB chargers!? They are a fair bit smaller then the firewire ones i have in the house!

So look at the bottom of both ur iPhone charger and ur iPod charger and see if they both say iPod! I would never suggest any one to use firewire charger as its a total different design to the USB ones.

The iPod chargers that use a USB type connection are fine. There are some very early iPods that used a firewire type connection. These should not be used with the iPhone.

i agree i only use the dock and charger that i got in the box or plug it into my mac with the iphone charger i got..why would you use a ipod charger??and not what u got with it????
