Network found but can't connect to it

I bought an iMac today, replacing my old iBook.
I use a wireless mouse and keyboard which work fine.
However, access to the internet does not. I have a built in airport card, and my network gets recognized, but 9 out of 10 times my iMac won't connect to it. When I enter the WEP password it times out quickly.
I checked the cable box and my wireless router, both are fine (my 2nd computer has no problem connecting and does not get kicked out either). I was able to download Firefox earlier (after 5 attempts) but that was pretty much it.
What's going on? Please help!

Thank you!

Wireless keyboard and mouse have nothing to do with the airport card... the keyboard and mouse use [bluetooth|http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/R SLID?mco=DCB4797F&fnode=home/shop mac/macaccessories&nplm=MB111LL/A] technology.

For the router i would try to rebooting the router and modem so that the signal is picked up from scratch, i had a similar issue when i first got my macbook... works great now every time... i also configured my local ip address to match the routers...
