Can Mac G5 use 800MHz Ram?

Can the G5 use 800 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM or do I need to use 533MHz?

Dual G5 1.8, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Hi-

First, a full explanation of the memory specs, from the Apple Developer site.

The main logic board of the Power Mac G5 computer has 8 slots of DDR2 SDRAM expansion for unbuffered, DDR2-533 (PC2-4200) dual inline memory modules (DIMMs) for a maximum memory of 16 GB. The Power Mac G5 accepts both ECC and non-ECC DIMMs.

Each DIMM can contain 256 MB (non-ECC only), 512 MB, 1 GB, or 2 GB of double data rate synchronous dynamic RAM (DDR2 SDRAM). The Power Mac G5 supports CAS read latencies of 4 and 5.

Additional DIMMs must be installed in the bank slots in pairs of the same size and type; ECC and non-ECC cannot be paired in a single bank.

The RAM expansion slots accept 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DIMMs that are 1.8 volt, unbuffered, 8-byte, ECC and non-ECC, and DDR2 533 MHz (PC2-4200) compliant.

DDR2 PC2-5300 (667mhz) DIMMS can be used, and most likely, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800mhz) as well, providing they meet all other compatibility requirements.

Using the faster rated memory will provide no performance gains, as the memory will operate a the speed of the memory bus, 533mhz.
So, it may be installable, but it won't be used to rated speed.

Additionally, attempting to exceed or underspec installed RAM can be more trouble than it is worth. Many people come in here to report kernel panics*:

have ended up doing just this. So follow specs, and only purchase from known reliable vendors*:
