The headphone jack on my macbook is displaying a red light, and the built in speakers will not play. However, whenever I plug in speakers, the sound works. What is going on? Is something jammed, or can this be fixed with the push of a button?
It means your digital audio out has switched on. You can insert a plastic toothpick in the hole and try and switch it off. The switch should be at the 3 o'clock position and go towards the 6 o'clock position. Some people also have had luck inserting their headphone jack and pulling out a few times. Another recent report was that inserting the headphone jack and turning it in the hole helped.
If your not successful or uncomfortable doing this you need to contact Apple about service.

where exactly in the audio out is the switch located? When I look inside, I see to slits directly in the front to the left and right, and another slit closer to the center. I take it both sections are part of this, are the ones in the front for the "hour" and the ones in the middle for the "minute", or the other way around? Or do I have this totally wrong?
Your eyes are better than mine. All I know is there has been success using the 3 o'clock position for the switch and clicking it towards the 6 o'clock position. I'm not sure what you mean by hours and minutes?
there are no hours or minutes, there is a switch in the port, and changing it from the 90 degree angle (or 3 o'clock) position to 180 degree (or 6 o'clock) position will fix your problem
hope this helps!
This just *****, should be addressed and most certainly should be covered beyond 1 year warranty since it is DEFINITELY caused by the OSX update!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks guys, used a 1.2mm precision screw driver to locate a little tab in the headphone jack which I found in the 9 o'clock position, I put slight pressure on it downward toward the 6 o'clock position...didn't really seem to move, but the light suddenly shut off and PRESTO! When I pressed the volume button sound filled my ears like a sweet violin. Wow, I was really frustrated by all of this. THANKS ALOT EVERYONE!!!!!!
I've had this same problem happen to me just now. I'm unable to find this "switch" you are all talking about. If I hold the headphone jack in the audio output just the right way, my internal speakers work. If I place a small metal rod into the output just the right way, the light will go off (while i'm holding it in, of course); but I can't seem to fix the problem.
What is this "switch"?
Where is it? How come some switches are in different places? 3:00 and 9:00? But it should be in the 6:00 position?
Man, someone should e-mail this to Apple Care guys.
I called them in Brazil and US and none could give me at least an explanation about why there was a red light coming out from audio jack. The solution both gave me was "take it to the nearest Apple Service Center".
What none have asked me was where this "nearest center" was. I'd be very angry if I had made this 500km trip to see the guy fixing my MB with a toothpick.

This is an actual hardware switch, so it is DEFINITELY NOT caused by a software update. Its usually caused by a small ammount of lint or something getting in the headphone jack and prohibiting the switch from turning off.
I tried sticking a tooth from a comb into the headphone socket and basically twizzled it about a few times, not particularly delicately, and it turned the light off and the sound now works properly. I don't know if this is unwise or could damage the socket or what, but it's worked for me so thanks for the help evenyone!
