Help with Disk Utility repair Permissions info

I ran repair permissions in disk utility and recieved this error and could not be repaired.

Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Versions/A/Frame works/QuartzComposer.framework", should be lrwxr-xr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
ACL found but not expected on "Library/Application Support/Apple/iChat Icons/Flags".
ACL found but not expected on "Library/Application Support/Apple/iChat Icons/Flowers".
ACL found but not expected on "Library/Application Support/Apple/iChat Icons/Fruit".
ACL found but not expected on "Library/Application Support/Apple/iChat Icons/Fung Shui".

What should i do? Should i Archive and install?

This may be benign, nonetheless, it is coming up repeatedly under Disk Utility. I had the exact same output today. I wonder if it has to do with an iChat error I have recently been having. A text message that I sent weeks ago keeps on popping up everytime I open iChat. Any ideas?

This is a broken symbolic link to /System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Frameworks/QuartzComposer.framework . This could be an issue when you update the operating system. It's hard to determine if those files in /Library/Application Support/Apple/iChat Icons/ are problematic without seeing what ACL's are set on those files. If I'm guessing then the ACL set on those files denies everyone but root to remove them. That would not be a problem or cause iChat to behave badly.

Ichat was acting funky, my fans in my macbook were revving up and being extremely noisy,and my track pad was uncontrollable and sluggish like it was starving for memory.

After experiencing this is when i decided to run repair permissions and got the message I posted.

Any Ideas?

Well, I believe you have a real problem. There isn't enough information provided to determine what needs to be fix. Or if it can be fixed. Personally, I would reformat the drive, zeroing the drive. This will map bad blocks. If this fails then the drive is failing or you have another hardware problem. You need to back up your user data before doing this procedure. Then install the OS. If everything is working OK then introduce 1 third party app at a time and test.

The system.log is your best friend when determining what is wrong with your computer. Repair permission output would be helpful after seeing system.log error messages. In your case a broken symlink is suspect. I would guess something went wrong with your install. Starting over is a PITA- but I believe it is your best option.

I'd start with manually downloading and reinstalling the 10.5.1 update. That eliminated all SUID/ACL warning messages on my machines.

Tried reinstalling update 10.5.1 and still the same error.
Any more suggestions before I erase and install?
Should I wait for 10.5.2 to see if it fixes it first?

What do you mean tried. Either you did or you didn't. Which error are you talking about? Do you mean you got the same report back from repairing permissions after reinstalling the 10.5.1 update? Please clarify.

10.5.1 update introduces the permissions errors.

I made a clean install of 10.5.0. There were no perms errors.

Software Update installed 10.5.1 with other updates ignored for this test.

Disk Utility perms were immediately flagged with these SUID errors.

Conclusion: the 10.5.1 installer creates these permissions loose ends.

Only if you install 10.5.1 via Software Update, which uses a delta versiontailored for your machine for the update. If you manually download and install the complete update, it resolves those problems. That's what most folks have found.

I did reinstall the 10.5.1 update and still received the same permissions error.
I downloaded it from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1051update.html
Interesting about the 10.5.1 update creating these issues.
Anything else I should try?
Almost looks like I should wait for 10.5.2 to see if it solves this problem.

If reinstalling the update didn't eliminate the warnings, then your situation isn't what others are seeing. Note that they aren't errors, but innocuous warnings that can be ignored.

You keep saying that it is a problem but the article tells you that it is not and that you can safely ignore the message.
The primary function of repair disk permissions is to access the bom file for the applications and return applications to the basic settings of the application when it was installed.
You would normally repair permissions if an application is having trouble writing or reading files and is quitting unexpectedly.
It rarely fixes a problem.
Also the bom file on the original install disk and the one on the hard drive may be different.
When applications are updated the new updated bom file reflects the settings for the updated version.
You can expect benign permissions errors if we run repair disk permissions from the install disk.
You should be cautious of running the repair disk permissions feature from disk utility on the install disk.
The bom files on the install disk may not reflect the settings now in the bom files on the hard drive.

Install discs do not contain any package receipts. Hence, there are no .bom files on an install disc. With each new version of OS X the mechanism for repairing permissions changes. In Leopard there isn't an installer database on the install DVD. In any case, either an install disc or Disk Utility on the boot drive will sufficiently "repair" permissions.
