Can I use a Wireless AirCard such as the AirCard 595U USB Modem to access the web. Would like to know if by connecting an AirCard directly to the USB port, will it connect to the internet without having to depend on a router and/or HotSpot to connect to the internet.

I have the same card. I was using it on my MacBook Pro with great success before I sold it. I hope it will work on my new MacBook Air.
you need to check if the device supports osx 10.5
this page says it is supported by osx http://www.sierrawireless.com/product/ac595U.aspx
but you might also need to check your carrier if they support using it with osx
if it doesn't physically clear the mba's usb socket you can always use a short extension cable
btw for mobile internet access i use bluetooth to go from powerbook to the gprs service on my mobile phone, so this is another option you might want to consider as it avoids carrying extra hardware around

I have the 575U and there's no question about it working with OSX 10.5.1. I took the card to the Apple Store with my last night, and I was hoping to see if it would physically fit in the USB port. I wasn't able to try it because the security system connects to the USB port. The MBA is unique in that the port is actually positioned on the curved underside of the computer. So the USB connector socket needs to be long enough so that the bulky portion of the card sticks out beyond the edge of the computer. I read one user saying that they were able to use their AT&T USB card with the Air but they didn't specify what card it was. I am hopeful that I can use the card with the Air without having to dangle it from a short USB extension cable. Please report if you are using a 575U or 595U card with your new MacBook Air.
GOOD Point on Fitting. Could have the iPhone issue again...
The AC595U works fine on my MacBook Air. However, I had to buy a small adaptor at Staples ("That was easy!") from Belkin for $9.95 for the AirCard to fit into the one and only USB slot on the computer. Works like a charm.
I have the device - it works on my MacBook and they do have updated drivers for it on the company's web site (not AT&T's, the one who made the USB device).

The Sierra Wireless 881U card from ATT fits fine in the macbook air usb port and works great. I suppose if you have an older broadband card that doesn't fit you will need to get some kind of adapter or upgrade. The 881U is a little bit bulky and sticks up perpendicular to the keyboard but it doesn't really bother me.
I have a Verizon V640. I purchased a Siig USB to expresscard adapter installed the Verizon manager software and it works great!
I only use my MBA for B2B Presentations. I never use the WIFI or BT, so I just removed the Airport card and installed/rewired an EVDO card. No more Airport issues for me! (Plus I have my USB port free) 😉
I have the AT&T USB Connect 881 and it fits perfectly in the air's usb port. It wrks great and there an application you can download from Sierra Wireless that works on the mac OS X. I also use it with my Boot Camp partition without issue.

Hm,
nothing to recommend to the average users, it voids the warranty of the Air. I wouldn't boast it around here neither.
Cheers,
Volker
