Can I browse the Internet with Apple TV?

Question

Can I browse the Internet with Apple TV?

Is it possible to visit internet sites with Apple TV? Does it have a build in browser or is it limited to YouTube and Podcasts? Thanks for any info on this!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

nope. youtube and podcasts... with update the itunes store.

otherwise buy a mac mini instead

Seems a bit strange that they would leave this feature out! I was almost set to purchase one, but this could be a deal killer for me.

Michael, you definitely have right idea. Browser + e-mail would be easy to add into ATV box and with help of USB keyboard (USB port in the back) you would browse Internet on your big screen TV. I think that would be great!! How could Apple miss simple idea like that?

i really think it's because of product line and price points...

mac mini for 599 which can do everything

or appletv which is specialized for media for 329. you add all that in to the appletv and you slowly make the mac mini somewhat less relevant. in time they may merge!

It's a shame, add Bluetooth (Keyboard and Mouse Wireless) a Browser and you have a true multimedia experience with Apple TV. Hey I would even pay a little extra for those features! 😉

I have read many times that the AppleTV is like an iPod for your HDTV. Ok, we now have the iPod touch which gives you the capability for music, video, pictures, podcasts, youtube, AND web browsing, email, maps, calendars, weather, stocks, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I'll be getting an AppleTV, but it is clearly not an iPod for your HDTV. It's something distinctly short of that.

And I might add Michael, if Apple would add screen sharing capabilities to Apple TV like the feature built into Leopard, you could completely control the AppleTV with your MacBook Pro, so you wouldn't even need a bluetooth keyboard and mouse if you didn't own them.

Why Apple doesn't do some of this great stuff on the AppleTV, I don't know. I suppose they'll burp and dribble these enhancements out to us eventually, but it's going to take them a long time.
