Setup D-link 604 router to emac

I've been trying every which way to put my old emac on a DI-604 router into a Comcast DSL modem. All the router doc.s are for windows and I can't get past the 'upgrade firmware' message. Seems you can't download firmware for that old of a d-link model from their website. Do I need to upgrade the firmware, or is there a way around this step? Any other place to get the firmware? Thanks
Mark

We use a DI 604 & have never had any trouble. The firmware is available from
http://support.dlink.com/downloads/# There are several revisions of the 604, but the web site guides you to the correct version for your router.

The web site on the router is straightforward to use (I am at work now, so I don't have the IP address for the web page.); the router can be controlled equally easily from a Mac or a PC.

Good luck on getting it working,

Thanks, Frank, for the info - I was able to download the latest version of the firmware but I can't get it to connect to the router to install it. The connection keeps failing. I've got the router into the modem through the WAN port, and my emac into the router through port 1 - I've reset the router several times - used different brousers - I've tried it every way I can think of so I'm going to leave a question w/ D-Link for whatever they can tell me. Thanks again though!

Are your TCP/IP settings (especially the IP address) in system preferences > network > ethernet correct? Normally, you should use DHCP. Clicking on "renew DHCP Lease" sometimes works. Another possibility is to set up the IP address & other settings manually. What URL do you use to try to connect to the router? I don't think that it makes any difference what is connected to the WAN port, but you might try disconnecting from the modem. Have you tried turning off both the router and the computer, then starting the router before starting the computer? Still another possibility is that your ethernet cable is defective. If so, if you manually input an incorrect IP address, set DHCP, and click "renew DHCP lease", your IP address will not be replaced by a correct one.

If none of these work, try running Network Utility, and ping the router. What message do you get?

I keep my setting on DHCP but I don't have a 'renew DHCP lease' option. If I set up the IP address and setting manually, do I just use the same addresses displayed under the DHCP setting? I've been using the http://192.168.0.1 to get to the router. I tried everything again not connected to the modem, and tried starting them sequencially, and I tried using the new cable from the mac to the router. I ran the network utility and pinged it 10 times, getting '10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss' as a message. Do you think another kind of router would behave differently? Thanks Frank,
Mark

This is a tough one! The fact that the ping is successful shows there is a connection.

Are there other computers hooked to the router that can be used to read the router log?
The router log refers to your computer by its Ethernet address, which you can find in apple menu > about this mac > More info... > network > built-in ethernet.

the info in your computer's system profile should be

Built-in Ethernet:

Interface: en0
Type: Ethernet
IP Address: 192.168.0.10x where x is some number not used by another computer on the LAN
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Broadcast Address: 192.168.0.255
Router Address: 192.168.0.1 <----- If different, use this in the URL for the router
DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1 <----- not important since you use the IP address of the router
Domain: xxxxx.comcast.net. where xxxxx depends on your geographical location
Ethernet Address: xxxxxxxxxxxx <--- this will be what is in the router log

The router log should have entries "DHCP lease IP 192.168.0.10x to xxxxxxxxx"

Let me know what you find

Two possibilities:

1. Your router has (for the LAN) the IP address 71.198.96.1. Try http://71.198.96.1 to see if that is true.

2. Your router has the IP address 192.168.0.1 which is the default setting for the DI-604, but the automatic DHCP assignment didn't work. Try going to System Preferences > Network > Ethernet, and configure the IP address manually to the settings:

IP Address: 192.168.0.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address: 192.168.0.1

and see if that works.

I tried both of those approaches and sadly got no different result. When I send to the router address I always get this message - 'can't find this page because you are not connected to the internet' or to that effect. Is the process of finding the router actually using the internet? It seems logical that I can't get to the internet through a router my machine won't recognize. Am I missing something really bonehead basic about the setup here? I've tried it cabled directly and only to the emac, and as described in the installation doc.s, from emac to router to modem w/ the same results - nothing. Is it likely a defective router? (Got it new, sealed in factory packaging)
clueless
