Choose Apple System Profiler from the Apple menu and check the capabilities of the computer's optical drive.

    Hey Ben,
Go under the Apple (upper left) > about this Mac > more info > select "ATA Bus"
You'll see your hard drive and the optical drive on your ATA Bus.

    Ben,
    Model: CRN-8242B
    Drive Type: CD-ROM

So it won't read DVDs because it's a CD player.

    ben,
is there any way that i can play dvds on it

No not from the CD drive, just like you can't play DVDs on your home CD player.
What speed is the iMac? Does it have FireWire?
I've dropped surplus DVD-ROM drives into a 400 iMac or used a surplus DVD-ROM out of an old G3 B&W in a LaCie external FireWire to play DVDs nicely.
