Cannot join network with ipod touch

Please help - I just got the ipod touch and got the january software update. I want to have email & web surfing capability. When I try to join my home network, it asks for a password. I've tried my wireless network key, and my computer password. Nothing works. Does ANYONE know what I should do? Does this have anything to do with wireless network settings? Servers? Addresses? What information should I be entering onto the touch?
Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

It wants your wireless network key when it asks for a password. It is worth proving the connectivity without security enabled but you don't want to remain like that for long.

A WEP network key (plain text) must be 5 characters long for 40bit WEP or 13 characters long for 128bit WEP. If the WEP key is in hexadecimal (10 or 26 characters) try adding a $ infront of the key.

Actually WEP can be cracked in a couple of miniutes so I'd advise switching your router to use WPA encryption. WPA is much more secure and you can use any password/key you wish.

If you post the make/model number of your wireless router we can probably advise more.

cheers

Just thought I'd pass on a tip, as I struggled connecting to my home Wireless network for a long time. You'll need to enter the Network Key for your Wireless router, but please bear in mind that this will be case sensitive. The IPod Touch's keyboard doesn't (IMHO) make it that obvious whether you are in upper or lower case, and you'll need to get this right to input the key. I was cursing my Touch for ages until I realised what was going on.

Good luck!

Hi guys,

Hope that this is not hijacking the thread but I wondered if anyone could let me know how to join a network which requires not only a password but also a login name. For example, I am doing an MSc part-time and I would like to use the Touch with the university's network. Whilst I can provide a password to the network, it cannot find the server for obvious reasons. Can anyone tell me how to do it?

Thanks!

Thanks so much for your information. I found out that in the details for my wireless configuration, I had a box checked (access control "on")that was inhibiting the ipod touch from joining the network! I do have a question: my ISP swears up and down that the 26 character WEP key I have (128 bit encryption) is just as secure as WPA, and they only support WEP encryption. What are your thoughts on this?

Hi and thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I've been going through the same craziness with the network key & uppercase/lowercase madness. I agree that Apple really needs to make some kind of software update that lets you keep the cap lock engaged if needed, and it definitely needs to be clearer letting you know when the caps are on or off.
Thanks again! I found out that it wasn't the key, but some other configuration (access control box was checked) was bad.
