iPod Classic Maximum Storage Query

Hi there.
I've recently just gotten around to figuring out perfectly how to manage my iPod (basically, if its in Manual, then the iPod rules!), but no one, especially Apple itself, has never really answered a question that has been asked a few times in this discussion forum:
Will my iPod crash after I have filled it with more MP3s than half its storage capability?
I mean, some users in this forum have mentioned that if you fill more than 49.000 songs on your iPod or 80 out of the 160GB, then the iPod will crash and erase all your songs.
Seeing that I have already filled about 60GB of the 160GB and have still got a long way to copy the rest of my MP3s onto it, I'm starting to worry that it might crash from day to day.

Is it true that some storage space is kept by default for videos and photos?
I really only need it for MP3s, so is there any way of bypassing this default, or is this default just an urban myth?

Thanks and sorry for the long message.

Hope somebody can help!

It's a sad fact but iPods can crash, as indeed can other mp3 players. As far as I can tell though you don't have anything specific to worry about when filling your iPod. There is a faint possiblility of a limit on the maximum number of songs. I recall someone claiming 40,000 as a maximum, which could concievely be a built-in limitation of the iPod's databse. (My old 40GB iRiver maxed out at 10,000 tracks in 2,000 folders and would just ignore anything additional.) That said, however, I currently have over 23,000 tracks on my 160GB with 90GB of it as music, 25GB free, around 25GB as video and 10GB as other. Well over 50% music. My daughter's 80Gb iPod has >14,000 tracks > 50GB music, just 200Mb of free space left and still works fine. No real signs of limitations there, just fill it until it's full.

I think you don't have to worry. On my 80gb iPod (which actually provides 74gb of space) is filled with around 3000 songs and just more than 50%. (this may sound pretty few songs but they are in lossless quality, so I have quite lot of big files)
It has NO problems so far, no errors.

Yes, it's true that it has some space acquired by default data (the system firmware itself, games, extras ...) plus: no hard disk can be used out to it's very last bit. (because of formatting, etc..) As I said, my iPod Classic is supposed to have 80gb of storage but it had 74.3gb when I opened it. I guess just like all the other ones. So, you should count on this one, however, for me, 74gbs is a huge space for only music and some video content.

Daniel

The problem is related to the size of the itunes library file. The bigger this file is the more sluggish itunes becomes and the more likely it is that your ipod will crash when you sync it.

The size of the library file increases dramatically if you have many large and complicated smart playlists.
