Apple TV versus Computer with iTunes

I am considering buying an Apple TV to watch HD but also to play my music collection though my home theater setup. The thing is, I can also do this with a computer tied to my home theater running iTunes. The biggest advantage of this method is that I can stream content from my Netflix account and other online video, although not in HD usually. I can assemble a home computer rather cheaply.

Can Apple TV support any video beyond the iTunes store and YouTube?

The tv can support video from many sources providing it is encoded to specifications, I watch all my home movies on mine as well as recorded tv shows (via my mac and eyetv).

It can't do everything the computer will do, but then the physical presence and the user interface/experience of the computer are just plain clunky compared to the tv. I personally couldn't be doing with a home made dozy box sat next to my tv and having to have keyboards, wires and other such junk hanging around in order to make it work. I'm not criticising those that don't mind, that's just me.
