Brand new Alpine CDA-9886 car deck not working with iPod/iTunes!

Ugh. I'm caught in the middle on this one. I bought an Alpine CDA-9886 car deck specifically to play an iPod in the car. The sales dude at Car Toys showed how it worked seamlessly with an iPod, and I asked what would happen when the car was shut off - the iPod stops, and picks up when you restart the car was his answer!

So here are a couple of things that don't quite work as advertised: first, when you use the search button to browse the playlist, it takes you to the top of the playlists every time, not to the location of the playlist that is currently selected. This is annoying, but not the end of the world. The slow scrolling is helped by the station buttons also serving as jump keys that take you instantly into spots within the playlist.

But the real frustration is that this unit does not shut down the iPod when you turn the car off. So when you get back in, your iPod will have been playing since you left the car, and if that's overnight, you'll also have a dead battery in your iPod, since it only charges through the iPod cable when the car is on. Apparently, this was not a problem with the previous generation of Alpine stereos.

So I called Alpine, got some surfer dude on the other end, and he was, like, "um, yeah, it's supposed to shut off." I asked if Alpine issued firmware updates, and the answer was "no". So that leaves me wondering if Apple attempts to address these bugs in iTunes or firmware updates..?

The frustrating part is that I'm basically having to just hope that Apple will come through with a fix, or return the stereo before they won't take it back. Lots of shrugging of shoulders instead of real help from Alpine and Car Toys. My Apple extended support has lapsed, so I'm down to this board for the answer on whether an Apple fix is in the cards.

For anyone with similar frustrations, a workaround (albeit annoying) is to pause the iPod before shutting down the car. That seems to work, though I've only tested this once. The sad part is that the stereo unit is very nice, so it's very disappointing not to have the Apple/Alpine integration worked out.

Anyone have any advice on this? Does Apple routinely address bugs in connectivity with Alpine or other third-party vendors?

That's where I'm leaning right now. If I knew Apple routinely addressed this sort of thing (e.g., like support for computer peripherals), then I would live with the problem in the interim. But not knowing makes that a bit harder to swallow.

Here's the routine for working around this:

- If you switch the car off when the iPod mode is playing, then you need to either pause the iPod (through the deck) or shut the deck off in order to stop the iPod.

- If you are in some other mode than iPod (CD or radio), the iPod is already stopped, and doesn't need to be shut down.

In both cases, the iPod will start up when the ignition is switched back on.

Pausing the radio only works if you come back in a short period of time, otherwise it unpauses itself. The only solution we have found is to turn the radio completely off before turning off the ignition. This is the only way to stop the ipod from running and draining the battery, and it will play where you left off when you turn it back on. I am in the process of returning my unit for the 9885, which apparently works well with the ipod. The tech at Crutchfield said the 9884 has problems also. If anyone has had a similar bad experience with the 9885, I would appreciate hearing about it before I send my unit back.

So I may be missing something but there sounds like there is no real problem here.

Why can you not do simply do this... ?

I now have the 9885 installed and it works great with the ipod. The unit shuts off when you turn on the ignition and doesn't drain the battery. It remembers where you left off and continues at that point when you turn the ignition back on. Highly recommend this unit instead of the 9886. The controls are a bit confusing at first, but the unit works great!

In answer to the above message-you cannot merely pause the unit, because it continues to drain the battery and plays, even if you have the unit or the ignition off. Therefore you can never continue to play where you left off. It is impossible to listen to a podcast, but even with music-who wants to start at A and have to refind your song each time. I ended up listening to Aerosmith over and over again each time I started the car!

Thats nothing!!!!!!

I "had" a 9885 and it was a GREAT radio. I work at Best Buy IN the car audio section. And I wanted to be the first adopter of the 08' models. I have a 60 gig 5th Gen ipod, guess what???? It dosent even PLAY the ipod. all the screen says is "NO SONG" and you have NO control over the ipod. The ipod is forever paused and cant control it. I tried it on 3 different 9886 decks, AND a different 5th gen ipod, all with the same results!! BUT my wifes new 8gig nano works like a charm. MAN WAS I ******! I called Alpine right away and they said "oh yeah we have known about that problem, were waiting on Apple to release am update for it to fix it". He also said they re-wrote the software that reads the ipods in the 9886.

I just installed a 9886 on my car and am using it with my 3rd gen ipod nano with no problems. Who cares it doesnt shut off, 9886 is superior to 9885, you cannot beat the USB capability which 9885 does not have. USB dude! it plays off my flash drive, so convenient,no power concerns, tons of storage and sooo cheap. I just don't see how someone can disregard this feature and switch to another deck over such a minor issue.
