Where does delete-key deleted mail go?

Question

Where does delete-key deleted mail go?

I sent an email, and wanted to copy and send to another. The message had a typo in it. I forgot to copy and paste before editing. I positioned the cursor in front of the extra letter in the word and hit delete. The whole email disappeared. It is not in the trash. Where did it go?

For those who like to admonish posters who ask stupid questions, I did try to locate the answer before making this query.

That is the weird part. It is just gone! Other emails that I deleted today by highlighting and hitting the red delete button are in the mail trash. Not this one! (No auto-empty; no delete by mistake. I have mail trash going back to Sept 14.)

PS I also looked in 'Junk" Not there, either.

I have just reproduced your scenario - I sent a mail to one of my other identities, retrieved it from the Sent mail folder, positioned the cursor by a word and hit the Delete key - whereupon the mail disappeared.

It has turned up in my Mail Trash folder (not the main Trash folder) - is this what you meant to say? If it's not in your Mail Trash, then I don't know where it is. Forgive this (maybe) stupid question, but you didn't empty the Mail Trash folder before realising your mistake? Or do you have the Mail Trash on an auto-empty schedule?

Ok this is my final attempt, and involves an even stupider question - you didn;t hit Enter instead of Delete as you thought, and Sent it without realising - have you checked your Sent folder?

If that's not the answer then I've run out ideas (I'm patently lacking in the geek gene).

I just highlighted all mailboxes, including 'trash', 'in', and 'on my mac', and cearched for this person's name. The second email I sent today appeared on the list. The missing one did not. It really has vanished!

The sent folder was where I was working from in the first place. That is where it disappeared from! The search below included the sent folder.
