Verifying website: Meta tags and HTML on .mac/iweb
Dear All,
Thank you for all the information posted here – I have never done anything with websites before, and looking at all the posts gave me the confidence and know-how to put up a website for my mom’s business. I don’t really understand what I have done, but its working great!
There is one question that has come up, however, to which I have not been able to find an answer. That is, how do I verify the website with Google?
Here is what has happened:
- created a website on iweb (’08) and published to .mac account
- rented two url’s on godaddy.com – changed the cname on the primary domain name to .mac, and forwarded the second domain name to the primary domain name
- Through Google business (Google Webmaster Tools) listed the URLs – now it’s asking me to verify my websites (i.e. that I own them)
From what I can gather, I don’t need to verify the sites to list the URLs or to submit a sitemap, but doing so seems to make available several tools – most important being the statistics of how the site is being used/found. It does not seem that this information is available via my .mac account.
In order to verify the site I need to upload an HTML file (what does this mean? How do I do it on iweb/.mac) or a meta tag (again, what is this? and how is it done on iweb/.mac?). If this cannot be done with iweb/.mac, is there any other similar alternative?
A last, and much more simple question – what is the sitemap for the secondary domain name – it technically does not have a site?
Again, thank you for all the help and expertise that everyone shares. As for what I can contribute – if you are new to this, GO FOR IT! It was worked well, is safe, and not as scary as it first looks!
Best,
Carlos
