Display Dithering (poor quality?)

A couple display observations:

- On light gray screens, such as the first bootup screen, noise/grain is detectable.

- Once in Leopard, display dithering is apparent. For example, hide the dock and look at the darker gradients towards the bottom of the default screen background. Also, look at gradients, such as those in iPhoto's fullscreen viewing mode's toolbar

Have you noticed display dithering on the Macbook Air?

After spending more time testing the color rendering on the Macbook Air, I must admit I am really disappointed. The display, despite being set to Millions, appears as though it is only displaying Thousands of colors. Which, looks really poor. Enough so that I am considering returning my unit. It sounds wrong, but I'm still hoping it's defective!

Hiya!

Gee...this is beginning to remind me of the screen problems that people were initially reporting with the iPod touch when they managed to get them . :S Perhaps you might want to try a monitor test of some kind to see how the colors on your screen are supposed to look? Something like this:

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

Maybe you'll want to see how your screen does if you load up that page first and look at the graphics on it. If something's wrong and you have to go to the Apple Store to have a Genius look at your MBA, you can try loading up this page to show them what's going on.

That seems to be the case. My understanding is that the MBA's displays specs are nearly identical to the MacBook. Both displays are limited to 18-bits of color depth. Which, means that color banding and dithering artifacts are going to be normal.

On such a beautifully bright and evenly lit display, it's disappointing to have you're awe of the MBA be interrupted by the banding of colors and dithering artifacts that make the display feel like one big GIF image! :P

i was about ready to return my mb for the air because I heard the screen blew it away. When I looked at it in reality it was the same including the viewing angle. only advantage is the air is about 10-20% brigher giving the illusion it looks better. The led screen has better battery life but from what i am reading overall the MB lasts a little longer then the air.

Thanks guys, this is exactly why I came here. I am not happy with the display at all. My 6 year old Titanium PowerBook has a better display. There is no "gif-like banding" going on at all. This is VERY much like the iPod Touch/iPhone display issues.

I have pretty good vision. Even at two feet distance I can see the "grid" in the blue buddy lines in iChat.

Since it seems to be "normal" I will sit tight. Its amazing how noticeable it is on the default desktop on the boarders of the dark parts of the "nebula".

Im just surprised my old Titanium screen looks so much better, just not as bright.

I hate to say this but the older displays were better in every way except brightness - they had better viewing angles with less color distortion, more even backlight, no LCD surface artefacts/graininess etc. The newer displays (all manufacturers) seem to be focused on brightness and contrast alone, at the cost of everything else. It's the industry, not just Apple. It seems that the brighter the display, the more other problems become visible. Some PC displays that lack the brightness look more consistent.

Rather predictably, Apple have deleted my previous post. So, let me try again. There have recently been some problems with iMac displays and the 'millions of colours' option. Perhaps there are similiar issues with other displays? Try searching the Macnn site for details.

This is in response to the user who is questioning the 'thousands/millions' setting, so I do feel it's of a 'technical nature'. According to articles on the web, this setting no longer allows 'millions of colours' on the iMac without dithering.
