hissing noise from the speakers

hi mates,

i hear a hissing sound from the internal speakers whenever the system tries to play sound through the internal speaker, be it a system sound or playing my music, or just by opening a application that may play music, i get this hissing sound before a system sound and this hissing noise continues for some time after the sounds are stopped playing, i get this hissing noise even when i change volume of the speakers. i dont get it through the headphones. the strange thing is i get this hissing noise even if i play a movie when my speakers are muted.

i went through this forum, some members have adviced to reset the pram, smc, reinstall the os, friends i tried all these but still i continue with this problem.

my macbook is brand new and just a week old.

i am really worried about this problem.

I am more than sure that is software problem because if I use WimdowsXP by Booy Camp and after is instaled all the drivers for windows there is no such of noise in windows., more than this, the quality of sound under windows is excelent, so.....I am to a new user of MAC, till now I was windows user, but I have very good knowledge in software and about problems with same issue under Tiger is everywhere in this forum, but they fix the problem quickly .
Please if you will contact Apple suport and they will fix somehow your problem , let me know and tell me also the solution.I am leaving in Romania and my MacBook is bought from USA and here the Apple comunity and also the support from theme is not so quick.
I am looking forward for a answer form you.Success.

hi sailor,

contacted apple phone support, unfortunately apple care number is not free in australia.

first time it took 17min and was not able to contact a technician coz credits in my mobile ran out.

second time it took 25min. i explained all the issues

told them i reset the pram, smc and reinstalled the OS and still i hear the hissing noise.

they replied that speakers may make a hissing noise if the macbook is on battery, but the noise should be very low and it should not be audible, if the noise is audible and loud, they suspect its a hardware failure, i got my case id and will be taking it to the nearest service center here, for them to have a look.

so if u have a macbook that is under warranty dont hesitate to contact them. i guess even refurbished macbooks bought in online store also have a 1yr warranty.

I also contact them yesterday by phone, our local representative, and after few discussions they told me that is probably just a software problem as long under windows and during the boot the sound is clear without this "strange"noise but I will have to bring my mac to them service to check.I will let you know after I will be back from there. Probably I will be back thursday or next monday.
Anyway they was very amiable and at least I am with a little more hope that our problem could be fixed and is not a hardware problem.
See you soon.

no read_nowrite ,
Please accept my heartiest thanks to you for this fix. I knew it was a software problem since the "whine" absolutley disappeared when booting to windows. When I took my laptop to Apple the day after I bought it, they suggested it was a fan problem and did I want it replaced. I was loathe to return the laptop to Futureshop as I had spent 36 hours setting it up with bootcamp etc. I felt confined to just using windows when I continued to search and found your post.
The extension worked and the really irritating [for me making any kind of creative work impossible] whine is now gone.
Thanks to you.
Have a great day.
