Power Mac G4 Stuck on Apple Logo

I recently got a Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver 733 MHz) with no hard drive and decided to test it out for functionality. When I hooked it up to my monitor, I got an icon with a folder and a question mark, which I was later told indicated that there was no OS/hard drive. I then tried a Tiger install CD which boot into the Tiger install menu. I checked the hardware and the computer seemed to recognize all its components (RAM, CD-RW drive, video card, etc).

Before I found a hard drive, I decided to take out the RAM (1 x 256MB, 2 x 128MB) and replace it with 3 x 256 MB (that is, take out the 2 128MB's). After I did this, I turned on the computer and I would get a kernel panic ("panic: we are hanging here..."). I decided to switch the RAM back to its old configuration. When I turned on the computer, I would no longer get the kernel panic, but when the Tiger CD is inserted, the computer remains frozen at the Apple logo (no spinning wheel). What can I do?

As an aside, I bought a USB keyboard (I have a mouse), but I don't think it was compatible as pressing 'C' or 'Shift' didn't do anything and the keyboard didn't light up when I pressed Caps Lock, for example.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi! For starters the Tiger disc must be a retail version and if it is for another specific computer you're probably wasting your time trying to use it because it won't work properly. The ram change could have necessitated a pram reset but your keyboard may not work. A PRAM reset is holding the command-option-p-r keys down at startup until the second chime. Tom

JoJo, welcome to Apple Discussions.

When doing upgrades, it's best to do them in sequence rather than multiple changes. That way, if you have problems, you have a better idea of the cause.

Since you can't do the PRAM zap from the keyboard, try a PMU reset. See Resetting Cuda/PMU on Power Mac G5, Power Mac G4, Power Macintosh G3

 Cheers, Tom 😉
