Importing Powerpoint Presentation to FCP

Hi,
I'm editing a conference presentation where I need to incorporate the presenters' Powerpoints. I'm assuming that I need to convert the Powerpoint into some other format before importing (slide by slide?) but I can't find anything with info on exactly what I need to do. I searched in FCP help and tried to find tips in Diana Weynand's Final Cut Pro book but have found nothing.

A how-to would be GREATLY appreciated. I do have Keynote, if needed.

Thank you

You can export a quicktime from powerpoint, but the quality will probably be terrible. powerpoint slides are designed for a computer display, and they often have text and graphics that extend well past title safety. If I remember correctly, you need to set your screen resolution on your computer to the resolution you want your export to be and then export from powerpoint. But I remember having a lot of problems. For highest quality, you really need to recreate the graphics in photoshop for use in the correct video format.

I'll second that. As a matter of fact, I'm wrestling with this very issue.

1. Beware of the white bg. too hot.
2. Type face typically too small and too close to the edges.
3. Doofy graphics

If you're not gonna rebuild in photoshop, try to adress the issues above then save each frame out as a tiff. It's almost EXACTLY dv size. DX or cut between frames for motion.

Just did this for a web project that needed quick turn-around.

It maybe a different approach but it worked like a charm.

1st, adjust your powerpoint to be in normal view mode and adjust to fill about 1/4 to 1/2 of your computer screen.

Use the shift-cmd-4 feature to create cross-hairs and start in the upper left of the powerpoint slide then click and drag to the lower right. unclick and you have a .png on your desktop.

Do this for each slide and bring them into FCP.

A little unorthodox yes, but it worked.

AFAIK, With power-point alone, there's no easy way to get slides out of PPT. You can export as stills, but then you lose all the animation.

You can use Camtasia for windows and that'll record a PPT presentation and then exports into a usable format for FCP. The software is around $300, however you get a 30-day, no restriction trial.

As someone else mentioned, you may be able to import it into keynote. keynote allows you to export the presentation in just about any format. I just exported a pres from keynote and used it in FCP and it worked great. I just trimmed out the excess footage between animation movements and it was seamless on camera.

Also, you can export from keynote with the background as transparent. i was able then then put a motion back on the presentation to give it some "kick"

Jake,
I exported the presentation from Keynote:
- playback: self-playing movie
- format: full quality/large
- made sure the .mov extension was included on the exported file name
- video size defaults to 720x540, @24FPS

I opened up the QT and it looks great, but when I try to import the file FCP is giving me a "file not recognized" error message. I've tried several times now and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
